I have a group of Americans coming to visit in August. I am considering picking up a Mora 2000 for use as a companion knife to a machete. I’m not too crazy about the sheath though and I’ve never handled a Mora 2000. I have an AFSK set up as a survival kit knife. Would the Mora 2000 fit in an Ontario Air force Survival Knife sheath? I’m considering ordering an aftermarket sheath with the knife. What do you guys recommend? I like to keep a basic kit with the knife. Also what are your overall opinons of the knife, especially if paired with a machete? Mac

I think you'll do just fine with the original sheath.
In any case, M2k will be a perfectly decent, care-free companion to a machete.

Would you mind telling me what kind of price the Mora 2000 holds in your corner of the world? Just out of curiosity. Thanks

Way-O,

The Mora 2000 is not available here in Brazil, hence I have to have a friend bring one down for me. They sell for about $30 in the States. I was very impressed with the Mora Swedish Army Knife. I have three of them, with the OD handle. I also have a Mora #1. I like the skandi grind knives for woodcrafting. Mac

The grind is spot on with M2k, I think. Perhaps even better than on the other Moras. I used a basic Frost's carbon steel Mora during my army service. I worked in the field kitchen, and it did everything I asked of it. I re-shaped the the hard red plastic handle with a hot knife and cut some notches in to it to help with retention. The M2k has good ergonomics out-of-the-box and is a durable cutting tool. The sheath, is basic, sure. But for belt or pocket carry I consider it quite sufficient. Surprisingly, the knife can be throwed pretty accurately :)

Shipping and all, they run around 27-30 dollars here in the states, I have an M2K myself and it is amazing for the money. Most Mora's are!

You cannot go wrong with the Mora 2000. Its good for everything: batoning, carving, slicing, cutting....

Really tough that thing! But the sheath is hmm... a typical swedenstyle sheath but out of plastic. But I like the M2000 more than my Busse Basic #4. :)

The reason I bought a Mora was because a friend, who does not spout BS, told me that his Mora is a POS, but it sure does hold an edge. He showed me his Mora, which is falling apart, he superglued the handle back on, but that blade is scary sharp. Went through a rope like butter!

Pict, if you like the others, you'll love the M2K. The sheath is a bit cheesy looking, but is well designed and functional.

My initial impression of the 2000 as compared to the SwAK, is that it is more comfortable to use, cuts deeper with less pressure applied, is a tougher blade, is more easily controlled and because of the handles shape and feel, is more versatile to use.

I still like the SwAK and have converted mine to neck carry since I split the belt loop. So I removed the loop and added a bit of black cordage to the sheath and secured it into place with military grade duct tape and then added a couple of ranger bands and added a bit of 550 as a lanyard strap. It rides handle down and so far, no problems with the knife and sheath separating.

Thanks for the repiles.

As you can guess from reading my posts I'm not a high end knife user. I mainly stick to "good values" and "for the money" knives. Someday when I'm rich and famous I'll break the $50 barrier on a knife. So far fame has eluded me.

Longbow,

Neck carry of a SWAK, that hadn't crossed my mind. How does it do on the jump test? Any retention problems? I had a Gerber Guardian pop loose once IWB small of back under a pack belt. It worked out the sheath and into my rear. I don't think I'd want a SWAK dropping out in my shirt. I do have a Livesay NRGS that I set up as a survival knife. Retention is 110%.

Other than the on-scene tactical kydex is anyone making an aftermarket sheath for the Mora 2000? I'm especially intrested in a "cargo pocket sheath" that will hold survival items. Mac

Mac, before I cut the loop from the sheath, I taped the cordage to the sheath and held the cordage in my hand and let the knife drop and just as it reached the end of the cord, I jerked up on it. The knife stayed in the sheath on five tries. It loosened a bit on the sixth try and without reseting the blade in tight, it lasted through 10 tries and popped out on the 11th. I'm not worried about it coming out.

It's illegal to carry in Calfornia anywhere but in full view on the belt, so I only wear it when on private property. Otherwise, it lives in the truck kit.

The 2000 is my primary go to knife right now and the M2K along with my Khuk made for a heck of a team.
