Welp,I had to do it,I got my first Mora last week.I had to see for myself how good or bad they are.I went with the 612 for the metal guard & wood handle vs a plastic handle/guard.Plus the carbon vs stainless steel.
I love my customs, but the Mora 612 will hold it's own with the best of them...as long as it lasts that is.(not sure how long that'll be.)
The 612 is a slicing monster & came very sharp out of the box.
Gotta love the thin scandi for carving.
I did some batoning through a couple of 2x4s & cut the pieces down to kindling size & even did some cross grain batoning with no apperent problems.I was expecting the blade or guard to come loose,or some rolling of the edge, but nope,no issues.... yet.
I didn't like the red painted handle so I sanded the red off & torched the bare wood then sanded it down with 80 grit & sprayed it with clear acrylic.
Using the rough 80 grit gives it some texture for a good grip.(plus I was too lazy to sand anymore with a finer grit )
The handle is pretty comfortable too,I didn't experience any fatigue or hot spots.Every time I got it out to work on it I had to make a feather stick.
I also didn't like the way the blade rose a bit above the handle at the ricaso(not good for the thumb ;)) so I ground it down & in so doing made a slight thumb ramp.Ahhhh that's better.:)
I also ground the full length of the spine flat with nice sharp edges for the rods.
Then I took my birchwood casey bluing touchup pen & blued the ferrule, guard & blade.
The bluing on the blade didn't come out even & looks like stripes of different shades of blue/black due to the pen strokes & high polish of the blade, but looks pretty cool imo.It doesn't show up very good in either the inside or outside pics,I'll try for a better one later.
There you have it,a customized Mora with just a few hours work spread over a few days.
That was a neat little project & now I have a very capable beater to keep in my truck & not worry if it gets lost, stolen or broken.
I think I'll try a triflex next.

Looks the way a beater should look. I gave a couple of 612s to a couple of my nephews. About the only thing that needed improvement on my Bushcraft Triflex was the sheath.

Looks good mykel. Handle's awesome.
For the price/performance, can't have enough moras.

Here's a forced patina (orange and lemon) on a #2.
