I cut off most of the guard, trimmed down the back guard, filed down the extra pommel protrusion, and cut off the silly Mora sheath stacker thing too.

Nice mod, Reuben! Now it appears to be more like an old 510..actually it reminds me of my older, red-handled 510. I may have to get one of these and do the same mod to it.

Regards,
Ron

Ha! I picked up a half-dozen of the old 511's and did the same thing...looks just like a 510:

I didn't know what to do with the larger sheath, but figured I could make storage for a firesteel somehow. This is actually my backpacking blade setup an it rides just under the hip pocket of my ULA Circuit pack:

All is good Ron...still slaving away for Uncle Sam, but planning to hang up the boots in the next couple years...

I like them:thumbup: Here's my Hultafors after some alteration:

I learned from 42Blades that applying a heat gun or lighter can melt the little white fibers and flakes back into the handle and improve the appearance, which I did AFTER this pic:) Thanks for sharing the knives.

Is that the same knife?
Good job man.

RB, The top one is factory fresh (I bought several from England for $10) and the bottom was an experiment gone right for once:D The handle was so big, you could carve just about any shape you could want. Thanks for the kind words.

Ha! Yeah, once I cut the 511 down it still fit into the sheath with the large area designed for the finger guard. I just used the good'ol Dremel and cut the top a little and the opened up the bottom enough to fit a 3/8" firesteel. The fire steel is JB-welded to a water proof pill fob (both from Going Gear) and it holds a 2-2.5 cotton balls smeared with Vaseline.

Fit and finish on the sheath are a little rough, but it works quite well and has been my dedicated backpacking blade for my longer hikes; works like a charm!

I've really been surprised with the carbon steel of the 511 (I almost went with the blue-handled stainless version). We did a hike not long after I added the blade. It was a little over 100 miles to complete our AT section up to the Smoky's. This was during June at temps were hot and humid with lovely afternoon thundershowers. I was so soaked in sweat alone, I actually had to make a fire a couple times just to dry our clothes out. I used the blade for fire making and that was about it, but I did wipe it down nightly and it only received a few small patina spots. Great little blade (my favorite has always been the 510 model).
