Hi,

today, I managed to break the handle on my MC2 when trying to make a lanyard hole ... I kinda expected that so it only annoys me a little. What surprised me how the tang looked.

When I got the knife a few months ago, I put epoxy inside of the ring - both from the blade side and from around the handle. Then I forced patina in the blade using boiling apple cider vinegar. And then I sanded down the color of the handles and filled it with boiled lineseed oil.

After today's "success" I got to see the tang and it was
a) all rusted, and
b) bent in the middle

How's that possible? Why would it be rusted inside the handle? And the bending, could've it happended in factory during assembly? Any ideas, pls?

Just a random thought, did you boil the entire knife? Maybe the handle expanded and allowed some of the vinegar to seep into it? The boiling might also have warped the handle and in turn the tang? Sounds odd. Pictures would be good to have. (Although I guess a warped tang looks like a warped tang and rust looks like rust. :D )

:D

No pohotos, as I already straightened the tang and have it submerged in a thinner (or how do you call in English the stuff that removes epoxy? lol) but I can assure you you are right - a warped tang looked like a warped tang and rust looked like rust! :D

Anyway, regarding the vinegar - I boiled the vinegar, put the knife into a pot and poured just enough vinegar to reach to the far end of the ring. So I didn't boiled the whole knife in vinegar. I boiled the entire knife in linseed oil though - that may had expanded the handle as you suggested ...

Another guess. Maybe some capillary action happened when it was in the vinegar.
Can't explain the physics but the tang could have sucked up some vinegar under the epoxy.
