Hello all,

Can one of the Mods please direct this post to the appropriate area? I've searched here and with Google and can't find the proper discussion area. Thanks.

I know this must be on here somewhere but I didn't have much luck finding it. Does anyone have any simple and quick ideas on how to plug the hole in the ferrule on a Mora classic to keep moisture/gunk/whatever out? Starting to get a little rust there just from moisture in the air. I don't want to make this a week-long disassembling project, I don't want it to look ghetto/fugazi, and I don't want to wind up inadvertently epoxying myself to a coffee table. Thanks.

We'd need a picture of what kind of hole you're talking about.

If you're talking about the gaps where it fits around the blade the only thing I can think of would be super glue.
Super glue and with and baking soda makes a rock hard substance that you can sand and file which won't look too bad if you take your time.
You could also potentially put in a wood shim and oil the handle well.
Btw why would you epoxy yourself to a coffee table ? Do you not put down news papers and wear gloves ?

We really need pictures to know exactly what you're talking about and how to best fill it.

Yes that's exactly what I'm referring to. Where the stick-tang meets with the metal ferrule and then goes down into the handle. There is not much, but there is an unfinished gap on either side of the blade that's wide enough to stick a toothpick in. When you're using the knife all manner of moisture and mud and guts and anything can get in there. Usually the point of failure from rust on these particular knives is not on the blade, where people oil the carbon steel, it's from water seeping into that hole and rusting the tang over time until it snaps right at the handle. These classics are high maintenance knives. The carbon steel will rust, the metal (what kind, I don't know) ferrule will rust-- moisture even collects under the ferrule as it is not sealed at either end. This ferrule is just basically a cap with a slit for the blade in it, it's not glued or sealed, it's just hammered on and then held fast by the blade tang being pounded into the handle through this ferrule. Other Moras don't have this issue because nothing gets in where the plastic is molded. The simple construction and rustic materials are part of what gives these knives their charm but unfortunately they create a maintenance issue.

Super glue or epoxy (after taping off blade and ferrule. Done the same with mine.

There are several threads on BF regarding driving the blade out of the handle, grinding off all the rust/cleaning out all the junk (you'd be surprised how much gets in there), then reattaching while filling the void with epoxy. It's not that much work, and can give you peace of mind for the life of the knife.

Thank you all very much for the suggestions. I apologize for not being on top of this post, my schedule doesn't permit me to be on here as often as I would like. Very glad to be a member of this forum, as usual everyone's help is an invaluable resource.
