Dad and I were walking in thick brush just awhile ago. Now pop is 75 years old and in bad physical shape. His knees, shoulders and back all give him trouble. If he falls down he cant get back up by himself. He wants to check out the back of forty acres we share.About three hundred yards into the thick woods his back gives out. He is in intense pain and can hardly move. In order to walk out he must have a clear path. I used the Mora Clipper to cut saplings out of the way with a technique I learned here. By bending the trees over , creating stress the Mora cut right through them. It was slow going but we made it.

We were already in a bad situation , and without a good sharp knife it would have been much worse.

You sure you shouldn't have batonned through them saplings instead?

Glad to hear practical application of a bushcraft technique using a no-frills knife.

Hope your dad's better.

Most of the trees were thorn covered black locust with lots of limbs. Dad could not navigate through them without twisting , turning, bending... Removing the trees was my only option.

Good stuff! I recommend going back and trimming the little upward facing ground spikes with a saw so they don't harden into hazards on the forest floor. Good to see that clipper in use. Those moras are a perfect back-up blade.

Good use of a good sharp knife, but I'd say it was you and your skills that saved the day. I hope your dad is well.

Cool story, well not your Dad getting hurt obviously...cool solution. There we go.

Pops is a lot better now.He was up and about that evening. He played competitive sports,{ fast pitch softball pitcher } into his late fortys. Threw thousands of games. Its really taken a toll on him. Rotor cuffs are spaghetti, he cant even lift his arms over his head, knees have been replaced, and back muscles pulled. He loves hunting and nature but the last two times out he could not have made it back by himself. I have to find some easier paths for him because hes not going to stay out of the woods.

In that case, it sounds like machete time. You may have to make him some paths. Maybe they make a powertool you can rent that will eat up a path for him?

Good luck with this. If he's going to run out by himself, maybe put a cell phone or walkie talkie in his pocket.

Good on you dipbait! Keep your dad active as long as you can. The person that coined the phrase the "golden years" was probably in his 20's. The only thing golden about aging is? :grumpy:
