LostViking,

I finally got around to taking a picture of my horizontal dangler modification to the standard Mora Companion sheath. Here it is...

Mora Companion by Pinnah, on Flickr

I cut off the stock sheath clip using a sharp knife. I assume that you (or anybody reading this) has access to one. ;)

The strapping is simple 3/4" nylon webbing. I sewed this off of the sheath, moving the seam just a bit several times till I got a very snug fit when sliding it onto the sheath. I then secured the webbing to the sheath with copious amounts of slow cure epoxy.

I tried to keep webbing as short as possible while still having enough length to dangle below the level of any of my waist length jackets and my hip belt.

The small clip allows for easy on/off to belt loops. I can wear it at the 11 o'clock location but prefer it at the 9 o'clock position.

This is the least hassle way for me to carry a fixed blade. I still vastly prefer a folder in my RFP but I can at least tolerate this.

Pinnah,

Thank you sir!

I like it. Having it hang down below a pack belt or cold gear is a definite plus. I have a recently acquired AKC Forest Knife. It came with a nice horizontal sheath. But in cold weather it is buried behind your jacket, sweater and other layers.

I like the drop idea. Often I use a baldric for my small axes. But this has potential for a small knife. I have often thought about a sword frog style setup. But I dislike things flopping around on me, as I move through the woods.

I have actually been giving some thought to a neck knife in general and a Helle Algonquin to be specific. Just for the easy access when hiking reasons.

Seeing your location, I am sure you can appreciate the added effort cold weather knife access can create. In my younger days. I used a L.L. bean Classic Anorak with a pistol belt fed through the roo pouch. It worked great. But both the anarak and the PB have long since disintegrated.

Most of my knife needs while on the move are small, simple, tasks like peeling birch bark off a downed tree for future fires. Not worth it to dig out the Forest Knife. But a necker neatly tucked inside the outer layer might be more readily accessible.

Thanks again man!!

Hey pinnah, thanks for sharing this. I might try something similar on my wife's mora companion. Its a great mod.
