Mora Companion sheath (mod, diy, homemade)

The more I use Mora, the more I like them. But the sheaths are right handed, I prefer Bic to firesteel, and ranger bands just don't do it for me. Out in my garage, I found a sacrificial tool pouch that I hadn't used in years (AWP brand from Lowe's I think). I also wanted to keep the clip mount like the plastic sheath that came with the Companion (nice for clipping to pocket and not having to remove belt) so I ordered a clip from knifekits.

I dissected the tool pouch and got to work. Everything on the sheath is hand cut and hand sewn. I stole the button buckle from a Gerber sheath. The tool pouch was made of (I think) cordura. It's similar material to what the BK16 sheath is made of, but a lot more heavy duty (maybe cause it carries a bunch of heavy tools and gets tossed around?). The material by itself didn't make the sheath stiff enough (was floppy by the handle area), so I sandwiched a piece of plastic I cut from an oil bottle inside the sheath that runs up and down the whole length.

e2a: it's a mini bic in the sheath

Cool. I'm working on some kydex for mine. I don't really get the obsession with firesteels either. I have a bunch but they're all backups to multiple Bic lighters.

Dunk them both under water for 30 sec. and you will see why.A lighter is easier for sure if it doesn't get get wet.
Cool lokkin' sheath,Finext. You might want to make a kydex insert insted of the plastic in the event that you fall it won't stab through the sheath.

The insert is made of kydex. The back of the sheath is made of two pieces of cordura with plastic sandwiched to stiffen the sheath up. I should have explained that better. I know bic vs. firesteel is a hot topic almost on par with politics and religion. But I'll say that if you can keep your tinder dry, I can keep my bic dry. I don't play around large bodies of water unless I'm swimming, and if it's raining, I'm not going to be in the rain long enough to be soaking wet. If I ever do get the bic completely wet, I can have it lighting again in less than one minute. I don't get the argument about lighters and water anyway, it's not like if it gets wet it vaporizes. I've been using bics for 15+ years (smoking) and feel confident in using one. I've been through that gun-ho super survivor thing before using the firesteel, but you don't get extra credit for making things harder.

That's why I do carry a firesteel, but I also carry more than one lighter and at least one in a ziplock in my pack.

PM me when you get it done up. I'd like to see how it comes out. Is it for a Mora? I would've liked to have something like Godspeed makes, with different attachments. But I thought I'd try to make my own before I spend more money on a sheath than on the knife itself.

I found a Bic in the dead of winter in a hot tub. It had been there for who knows how long. It took some time, maybe 30 minutes, but in the cold air, cycling the flint, I got it to light.

Yup! It's good to know how to get by with less, and the KNOWING gets you bonus points. But doing the easy thing is often the intelligent thing as long as you don't let your learned skills be forgotten or grow overly rusty.

Yeah I have three moras. A companion, companion HQ, and I forget the official name but I have one that has a chisel tip and grind. I prefer the companion to the HQ so I'll grab a few more down the road for packs and the trucks and things.

Here's another idea been playing around with. This time using the original sheath. I think this might be more accessible to others. First I hot glued the lighter to the sheath to keep it in place while molding the kydex. It's not as perfect as I would like it, but this only my second time messing with the stuff.

The piece of kydex would need to be glued to the sheath. I don't know what type of glue/adhesive would work best, and I want to make sure I've got it nice and purdy before making it a permanent attachment. The lighter is retained by the ridge on the sheath right above it. When the lighter is put in, it snaps in. The kydex looks like it will just fall off, but it will snap on, or slide it up from the bottom, I just trimmed the front to where it doesn't show as much, but still wraps around the edge a little.

Biggest problem is getting it to stay on. Just tried PVC cement, and it popped right off the sheath! The sheath completely repelled the cement.

Krazy glue did it! It's definitely on there now. Now off to do the rest of the sheaths like that...
