Mora Companion vs Clipper

Hey all. I was browsing over at Ragnar's Mora catalog and noticed a family of Moras called Companion. The site says that the Companions are meant to be replacements for the Clippers.

Does anyone have a Mora Companion? Are they new? I can't seem to find anything on them, and I don't remember seeing them so I assume they are new.

What are the differences between the Companion and the Clipper? Are the tangs the same? The site only says that they use the same sheath and that the Companion lacks the molded checkering on the handle.

I would highly doubt that there is any difference in the tang construction.
Never change a winning team.
The Companion is relatively new, yes. It came to dealers in 2010.

According to a polish forum, this will be the transition :

Morakniv Clipper 840 i 860MG ---> Morakniv Companion MG
Morakniv Clipper 860F ---> Morakniv Companion F
Morakniv Clipper 861 Rescue ---> Morakniv Companion F Rescue
Morakniv Clipper Rope 861F ---> Morakniv Companion FS

Here is a german dealer with some nice detail pictures ...

I only wish they would have managed ambidextrous sheaths by now...

If I'm reading the specs correctly the stainless MG has thicker .098 blade. The Clipper is .079.

I just received a carbon steel Companion MG.
The blade is only 2mm thick, unfinished on the spine, while the stainless ones are a tad thicker.
It feels lighter than a Clipper, but i have no scale here or the other model handy.
Weight is probably the same.
The new grip smooth surface on my MG is extremely comfortable and nicer than the pebbles on the Clipper.

Gambrinus, thank you for responding with your input on the new Companion knives.

So it is true that the stainless Companion is thicker than the carbon. Interesting. I wonder why Mora chose to do that.

I'm glad to know that you prefer the Companion's handle grip. I was worried that they may have been taking a step backward on the handle.

Given a choice between the Clipper and the Companion, would you choose the Companion?

I could not choose as i have not used the Companion nor the old Clipper that much, really.
I prefer the old 780 Triflex "style" knives, which are sadly gone.
They had the best grips and some slipping-onto-the-blade-safety in the general design.

I would say that the smoother grip of the Companion is easier on your hands if you do a lot of carving. But your sinews will revolt first.
If you are white-collar, maybe then you could feel the difference.

The Clipper is not hard either. In the end, i would toss a coin and not think too much about it. Both are very very nice handles, only the surface is different.

As to the choice of stainless being made a bit thicker, maybe brittleness was an issue.
I am not a steel freak either.
Maybe it is an issue within sweden, with the workers´ feedback there, i do not know.

But these knives are considered handymen tools over there, not bushcraft items, i would suppose.
The Mora 510 has received a "guard" because workers cut themselves with the guardless model before, that i know.
The "industrial cooperative" wanted the guards, if that is the correct american term.

0.5mm do not make that much difference, honestly.
It gives more surface to press your thumb into the spine, if you can feel that.

Thinner always cuts better, in theory, if the geometry is similar.

Sorry to drag up an old thread! Thought its better than making a new one!

Just got a 'Morakniv companion MG clipper' as described on the website. Seems like a nice knife, grippy handle nice sheath. Good point also a sharp edge (but not razor which I was dissapointed about. Or is that not really neccesary? Im a newbie).

For 1.50 more I could have got the 510?

What is the general consensus on the companion MG clipper? Decent considering the low price tag?

Very, very good. I have owned knives that cost $300+ and the Mora will function just as well as them, if not better.

Comparing it to other Moras, it is one of the best designs - though they're all good!

The Companions have longer tangs than the clipper has, as well as a better sheath. And the smooth rubber is vastly more comfortable than the checkered pattern in extended use. So far they've been VERY popular, as well. The stainless model is slightly thicker and the spine is ground square, while the carbon model has the spine as-stamped. :)

Thanks guys!

The way the site I bought it from describes it, it sounds like it's a 2011 model and its both a clipper and companion, like the company has put them together?

Is the 510 higher quality? If so, is it by a lot?

It's a replacement for the clipper model, which is being phased out from what I've heard. Could be wrong though. The 510 is a cool and iconic model, but I certainly wouldn't say it's higher quality. The new series of Moras is VERY high quality, especially the improved sheaths--they're as good as kydex as far as I'm concerned.

I find the Clipper/Allround/Companion handle to be more comfortable than the 510's. As FortyTwoBlades says, the quality is pretty much standard across all the Moras, though some models have the spines left unfinished and some have a tidier flat finish.

Think mine is left unfinished. Tried it on my fire starter and the spark comes off so much better than the little thing attatched to it.

Thakns guys!

The carbon steel Companions have an unfinished spine. The stainless ones have the spine ground square. :)

Interesting information, thanks. I bought six red carbon 510's I believe, years ago and didn't do much with them. Sod cutting etc. They were so cheap and sharp that I had to grab them. About 7-8 bucks each maybe at a farm supply outfit. I still have a few that pop up now and then. As of late I am starting to Jones for a couple of stainless Companions................
