Ive been wondering recently just how much abuse my little wood handled Moras were capable of taking. Ive never broken one before, and have outwitted needing such brutish measures for camp-craft and backpacking (
), but curiosity has gotten the best of me and I simply must find out just how much abuse my little Moras can take. So I pulled out an extra Mora #1, a factory defect no less (blade doesnt protrude to the handle base and has no drill hole or securing ring), Ive wrapped the handle with hockey stick tape for additional grip and will be doing everything within realistic bounds to test its breaking point and structural weaknesses.
So far, Ive batoned it through a handful of saplings, pounded it tip first deep into an oak tree and bashed it out, and hammered it through firewood without concern. It is surprisingly sturdy, and works through the wood like a comb through a buzz-cut. Ill eventually try splitting larger rounds by batoning the handle rather than the tip. I trust the strength of the wood handled Moras over the synthetics, a 510 of mine became rattley on me after some light batoning. Im going to keep upping the anti whenever Im in the woods until it either breaks, or Ive simply exhausted feasible circumstances.
So, if you have a Mora (if you dont have one, go buy a couple!), go out and try to break it through real world use (take some pics if you can!), no concrete and metal bludgeoning, but rough tasks that you would put a 4 blade through in the woods. Ive been very impressed so far, I think you might be too. Id like to see if Moras are breaking left and right after a few minutes of pounding , or if they can take some heat. Hell, worst case scenario youre out $10 a little more knowledgeable, and had a great time beating on a knife! Ill post updates as I go along, maybe make some comparisons to the veritable tank the Fallkniven F1, and if my camera permits Ill get some pics.
Anyone else game?
