So, after my hand slipped on my Mora HD and I sliced my finger open, I decided it was time to replace the handle. I've drawn up a few designs to get an idea of the general shape. And I believe that I'm going to do this with some chestnut I got about a year ago. And also, I've included a picture of the blade along with my handle ideas for those of you who are curious about the tang shape and length. :)

I like #3 best. I think it would look really good with a stainless bolster and the guard brought out just a hair.
Will this be a WIP?

I agree. I think that's the shape I like the best. I'm not sure if I'm going to put a bolster in it but that is definitely an option. And yes, I'm planning to do a work in progress with this one. I'm carrying my buck 113 skinner right now. I like it a lot but I really miss my mora. :(

Ah good, I'll be following along then. Good luck!

That reminds me, I need to fix up my classic #2. I left it in the bed of my truck for a few months so needless to say, theres a lil' bit of rust:o

Okay, I know this was supposed to be a work in progress but that didn't happen. It's been an interesting few days. My ac broke yesterday morning and we can't get the part to fix it till tomorrow. So, very warm inside. Anyways, I wandered down to the shop and started cutting into the old chestnut board. Before I knew it I had the handle shaped out and installed on the blade. It's been sanded to around 600 grit and then sealed with super glue. I then sanded it again with 600, applied a few more coats of super glue then sanded again. I finished it off on the buffing wheel for a nice polish. I'm pretty happy with the results. And it still fits on the leather sheath I made for the original knife. Happy to have my friend back with a safer, custom handle.

Thank you! I wore it today at work and I'm much happier with this knife now. It's more comfortable and I think I'll be less prone to being stupid like I was before. I also made a new sheath that's shorter than the original and it is much easier to extract. I'll post a pic of the sheath tomorrow

How'd you get the tang attached?? I have a Helle blade that needs a handle, and I'm stumped on how to approach the task.

Love the new handle!

I mounted the block of chestnut in a small vise and used a drill bit the was the same width as the tang thickness. I drilled three holes in a line and slowly slide the block back and forth to conecct the holes and make a slot. I was planing to epoxy the handle on but it was such a tight fit that I couldn't pulled the blade back out. So I just used some of the chestnut dust from the bandsaw and filled in the small gap at the top of the handle. It's pretty solid.
Oh, and here is the new sheath. :)
