Moran Drop Point Review.

Pat, I believe Sal said that Spyderco is back shipping Morans with bigger Tek-Lok instead of the small one.

Hi Pat. Very nice review. Thanx for the time and the input. I'll look into the "tackiness reduction" question and adding a "kick" to the back of the edge.

Sal,

I'm not worried as much about the taciness of the handle, because it was just a little different. The handle shape more than makes up for it.

By my measure there is 1/4 to 3/4 inch of wasted space at the rear of the cutting edge, measured from the back of the edge to the grind lines and handle respectively. I could understand the space if it were comfortable and safe to place the finger on the choil, like on my Military. The arc of the choil is not really enough to protect in an unlikely slip, and a cutting edge all the way to the handle wouldn't be bad. After all, the folders need to go to full thickness to have a place for the pivot pin and to assure the lock up. This makes a convienant place for the choil. I really see no need for it, but that's me.

If the blade were slightly reconfigured (even if made shorter so as to have the same overall length) to eliminate this space I would purchase another one.

It is quite fitting that a Spyderco Moran drop-point was my 7th Spyderco, and since I received it on Tuesday, it's been on my belt or within my reach for the last 72 hours; so unless I go into a courthouse, school or airport, that's where it's going to remain--I love this knife! So far I've prepared two dinners (cut veggies, meat [I washed the knife after cutting the meat], et al), and I've cut a whole bunch of other stuff (boxes, cords, et cetera) and it's still cutting very well. I have a few more fixed-blade, drop-point hunters that have now been replaced as my every day carry knife ;o). My next Spyderco will be the Wegner collaboration

Ic609. The major objection edge to handle config was that then the handle was too small for large hands.

We also try not to change the designers design (in pattern) if possible.

Sal - Please leave the "choil" on the Morans';
better yet, just don't mess with a great design. I see from your last post, you seem to be in agreement.

I can understand that, and that is why my Moran has been relegated to the hiking/camping arena as a supplement to my kukri. I just am not carrying it on duty any more. If the choil were safer OR the edge went all the way to the handle I would have no problem carring it daily.

I also understand that the Moran was not designed as a fighter/MBC blade. It just feels SOOO good in the hand.

It is with out a doubt the best carring utility blade I have. I won't cut down trees with it, and I won't carry it as duty knife. I will cook, trim, and cut many items though. I think it will be a great skinning knife.

I will buy a Gunting drone to carry as a search and control tool.

Sal, lemme guess, the difference in the rubber inserts is all in my imagination.
