Moran - FB01 or FB02?

I am thinking of acquiring one of these. I know they're great knives, and I can't resist the "package" with it's fabulous sheath. But which blade style do I want?

I think I understand the benefits of each type, at least in terms of big game hunting use. I realize that the drop point design is better for field dressing, but I kind of prefer the looks of the upswept tip on the FB01.

Although I'll use it for hunting, I'll end up using it much more as a "camp kitchen" knife, I'm sure. As well, I'll carry it for general outdoor use.

I guess what I'm wondering is whether or not there is anything that the upswept tip model will do better than the drop point version?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Jeff,
It’s just me but I like drop point version more because of better tip control.

Slightly longer flat ground blade, thin pointy and very controllable tip for fine work, very comfortable handle, decent sheath with Tek-Lok clip.
I can’t tell with clear cut if I like it more than Moran drop point but at least not less :)

Sergiuz,

I appreciate your suggestion. I have had my eye on the Fred Perrin fixed blade alright.

For now though, I think I'll buy a Moran for all around use. I am kind of leaning towards the drop point version, as it seems that it might be a better chopper (for camp kithen use) and not have any significant shortcomings in terms of it's other possible uses when compared to the design of the clip point version. I will also want to use it while big game hunting, and the drop point model would be better for field dressing.

Interestingly, you mention the tactical aspect and I myself have thought about how handy one of these would be as a companion on my late night walks around the neighborhood; particularly with it's multi-function sheath.

Thanks, Jeff/1911.

Jeff,
Mentioning Joe’s definition I was just kidding about “tactical” term :)
The best tactics in knife fight is to do not go where it could occur.
Without kidding, this is quite seriously, just ask someone who was ever wounded...

Sergiuz,

I have no intentions of entering a knife fight. I wouldn't do well at all. Thanks for the words of caution, I appreciate it.

Jeff.

In reading a past thread about Spyderco Moran's, I noticed a reference to "the old style, mirror-finished" Moran's. When did they change? Are they now finished in a different way? I would most certainly want to get a hold of a shiny one, if at all possible.

Jeff/1911.
