I plain to buy the trailing point model for outdoor purposes and eventually as an EDC knife. I have seen one of the first models and it seems to be the relevant tool I need.

My questions are about the concealex sheath (the sheath I have seen is the leather one). First, I would like to have your impressions :

Is the knife well maintain ?
Is the concealex maintenance easy ? (It is the same material than the Perrin Bowie model sheath ?)
What are the different positions allowed by the TekLock fastening system ?

I also want to know if you have adapted an other kind of fastener to allow, per example an IWB carry option. Could you give me some advice ?

I know, this is a long question list just for a sheath, but for me, the sheath characteristics are important as the knife ones are... so I thank you in advance for your help !
;)

Louky, I own a Bill Moran Trailing Point Featherweight and a Perrin Bowie. They are great knives! These are my impressions of the Moran Featherweight:

Is the knife well maintain? The blade is made out of VG-10 steel. I have had NO problems with any of my VG-10 Spyderco knives. I thank this steel takes a great edge and is very durable. This knife feels very light in my hand, yet I can get a great grip because of the handle. The Kraton inserts on the handle are very "grippy".

Is the concealex maintenance easy? Is it the same material as the Perrin Bowie sheath? I have several knives and tomahawks with eather Concealex or Kydex sheaths. To be honest with you, I can not tell the difference between Concealex and Kydex. I find them to be both great materials for sheaths. As for the Moran sheath compared to the Perrin sheath, The Moran sheath that came with my knife is SO MUCH BETTER than the Perrin's. The sheath on my Perrin Bowie is very loose and make a lot of noise when walking. The knife really rattles in that sheath! The Moran's sheath is very tight and the knife does not rattle any when I am walking. I would say that the Moran's sheath is the best factory sheath I have. It really reminds me of some of my custon sheaths. As for maintainance, I just wash mine in the sink an dry it off.
What are the different positions allowed by the TEK-LOK fastening system? The carry options are small of back, crossdraw, inverted, horizontal, and vertical. I carry mine in a strong side vertical position. My sheath came with a large TEK-LOK. I have read that some of the earlier sheaths came with a small TEK-LOK. I believe that with the small one, the holes on the sheath would not line up for a crossdraw carry. This sheath offers a lot of different carry options to choose from. As for IWB carry, what I have done in the past, not with the Moran Featherweight, is to take a neck chain and run it through my belt or belt loops and then through a hole in the sheath. This works ok, but if you were going to use IWB carry a lot of the time, I would buy a IWB loop or a j-hook for your sheath.
Overall, I would say that the Moran trailing point knife is a great knife with a very good factory sheath. Buy one, you will not be disapointed!
As for use as an EDC knife, the Moran is a very "NON-THREATENING" looking knife. The Perrin Street Bowie, mine is black coated, one the other hand, is a "VERY-THREATENING" looking knife. There are places that I would feel very uncomfortable taking it out in public, and I live in Alabama!

I don't think I ever used the Tek-Lok on my Moran. I put a IWB snap loop on it immediately and it carries IWB like a dream. Great knife, pretty non-threatening and it works great for everything.

Enjoy it!!

I have a Moran Drop point, and I got to check out a Temperance on pass around, and I would have to say that these two knives have excellent Kydex sheaths – much better than any other factory Kydex sheathes I have seen.

What a wonderful answer !!!

Thank you very much for all this detailed pieces of information. My order is on the way, I’m impatient to receive the knife. I already found a belt loop to put on the sheath for IWB carrying (I hope it will fit the sheath !).

Have a nice day.
;)

I have a Moran drop point, and I really like it. It doesn't get a lot of use as EDC, but the TekLok setup, sheath, etc. are excellent.

Question: Can someone point me towards more info on where to find
a "IWB loop" ? I get the concept quite clearly, and I think it's probably what I've wished I had sometimes (especially when I'm not wearing a belt). But, I wasn't aware there were commercially available loops for allowing IWB carry of a sheathed knife such as a Moran...

I use the loops from Bladetech. They aren't cheap ($10 for 2), but they are adjustable and super convenient. I have them on 2 holsters, 3 sheaths and a flashlight pouch. Can you tell I'm a fan?
