"Moran Style" Knifemakers?

Knowing that I cannot afford a ST-24 made by Bill Moran, does anyone know of any other knifemakers that make a similar knife? I am not talking about exact "clones", but a simple knife with the same type of blade and handle.

Many makers are doing handles like the one Bill uses for his fighting bowie. Recommending Jay Hendrickson probably wouldn't be of much help as his knives are not too much south of Bill's in price. Check out the knives of Dan Farr. He is doing great contoured handles (actually, he is an outstanding bladesmith) and his prices are really reasonable.

You should also check out Nick Wheeler. He really should get himself a web site. This guy really knows what he is doing. He is very knowledgeable in the field of metallurgy and he makes drop dead gorgeous knives and once again is very reasonable with his prices.

Edited to correct a typo

Jay Hendrickson MS --> not really expensive although hurts the bank account pretty bad

Nick Wheeler

AG Barnes

Wally Hayes --> I think he was permitted by Moran himself to make a 'copy' of one of his fighter. The ST-24.

Check out my webshots page for some of Hendrickson's works. Gorgeous hunters he makes !

Mark Sentz is another bladesmith doing Moran style knives, and he does them quite well.

So does William Hurt (from Fredrick MD). I believe he is still a jorneyman smith and his prices are very reasonable.

William Hurt, AG Barnes, Jay Hendrickson, and Mark Sentz all learned from Bill Moran directly. Their styles are very much "Moran Style" knives. They all still live quite close to Bill and get together often.

CAS Iberia did a limited edition of a Bill Moran style knife (approved by Bill). As a production piece it is very nice. You may want to check if it is still available.

Hope this helps,

Pam

BTW, does anyone have any pics of Moran ST-24 ? I know what she looks like, I just want to have some pics of that beaut.

Keith,

Acctualy Luciano also did one ST-24 model once, but is was his first silver inlay attempt, and it didn't turn out that good. But the blade was very balanced and the handle felt just perfect.

I've heard very good things about Bill Hurt. In fact, one of his knives was featured / tested in that article in a French knife mag' which we discussed a while back and got raving reviews.

Does he have a website?
