I'm new to knife making and have been buying my steel from knife supply houses - 440C in precision ground sizes for my folders. After coming to this web site I found out about admiral steel. I checked into them and WOW what prices.

THEN I read the archives and it looks like you love 'em

or hate 'em

. Complaints about there 440C and imperfections in other steel that prevent good finishes on the knives and the so forth.

So my question is how good, really is their products? I am looking at 440C and to try ATS34 in 3/32 sizes. Is this good stuff or what??????? Or should I stay with the knife makers supply houses.

The knifemaking supply houses are getting it from Admiral or someone just like them depending on the alloy. If you just want to try a chunk then the knifemaking supplies is your best bet but if you want a lot go to the big guys.

ditto.

You can get 440C, 440V, 420V, 3V, 154CM (which is the same as ATS34) and Cruwear from Crucible. Maybe even D2. I have never heard ANYTHING bad at all about Crucible. More and more knifemaker supply houses are using them nowadays.
