and a partrige in a pear tree! Sorry, couldn't resist that one.

Well, I had a blast throwing and chopping! I even got my 10yr old son outside and throwing. He got several sticks, and now wants his own Brend. Most of my sticks were spike sticks. I will try to correct that later, but for now I just like to here the thud and see it stick. My hawk is pretty dirty. I missed the board several times and hit plenty of dirt(and a sidewalk once, and a swing set too :p ) I didnt know what to clean it with so I sprayed it with wd-40 and I am letting it soak for a while. I'll wipe it off later and hopefully the dirt and stuff will be gone. What to you guys use? I thought about gun cleaning supplies but right now I only have some Hoppes powder solvent and I wasn't sure about using that. I have made an imagestation album of my hawk and trowing setup. I took the pics myself so don't expect great quality, but give it a look and feel free to leave comments. I didn't get the pics in the order I wanted so its not as linear as I had planned but there are pics of a board I chopped, hawk stuck in wood and my cord wrap etc. I think that I am going to not get the other knives I was planning on for a while. I am getting a Swamp Rat Camp Tramp for Christmas and that will have to do me for a while. I am going to start saving for a next gen ranger. I figure I might as well just get the best one, because like a great man once said.."buy quality and only cry once"

Here is the link to the album (I hope)

Sharing is fun. In fact I added a couple of more pics after I sharpened it a little. It still won't shave, but its pretty sharp, and with the force it gets behind it I reckon it can cut most anything within reason. That spyderco and the hawk are a strange pair. That might be a good excuse to get an Edgepro. Anyone ever sharpen their hawk with an edgepro? If so, do tell. Thanks.

Alpha...

Try free-handing it for the best angle then...if the Sharpmaker is 30 as you said, its too steep and fighting against the bevel we put there.

I keep all of my personal ATC products "blistering, terrifying sharp" with one fine-grit crock stick.

If you still can't get it the way you want, send it in and we'll fix it right up for you.

blistering..terrifyingly sharp is exactly what I want. I am reluctant to send it back for two reasons:
1: I want to keep it near me :)
2: I can't come running to you guys all the time

But I might send it in if I can't figure it out. I have been thinking about using one of the triangle stones like a file and laying the hawk handle on the bar with the head hanging over. Is that a step in the right direction? I just don't want to roll the edge, then I would have to send it home for a fix. I don't know why I am trying to make this so hard. ALL of my knives are hair-poppin' sharp, maybe its just a mental block since this is my first hawk. Thanks for all the input, I know your a busy man.

...the Brend Hawk is made much like most knives...we use an 8" contact wheel for the grind, apply the bevel by hand on the same wheel at a shallower angle, and buff off the wire on a cotton wheel for a razor edge.

If you use a trailing (toward you) motion on the corner of one of your triangle ceramic stones, like a strop, holding it at about 25 degrees, a few passes on each side, then go to some leather using the same motion, you should be fine.
