I live in Bear and Cougar country but at this time of year the greatest danger by far is that of falling trees!
Below are two photos from my walk yesterday, every time you hear a creak you brace yourself for the worst:eek:

Sorry, :o the title brought out the Jeopardy contestant in me. :p Great pics!

Ive got to say cougers are worse, you dont hear them coming until their teeth sink into your skin. Cool pics though. Glad you can run faster than trees can fall.

Damn right !!!
As a point of interest I have read that deadfall from trees is actually the biggest killer in jungles as well....pretty amazing when you consider all the poisonous critters in them jungles !!!!

Hey I'm with you there Rupestris...I dared to speak when my Mrs was watching Desperate Housewives the other night..........Throw me a grizzly anytime!!!!!

Friday's storm took the life of one person here when a tree crashed into his home .Another home was destroyed though occupants survived. The photos show how foolish it is to have large trees within striking distance of your house !!

Or car!

Here in SoCal eucalyptus are "shedders" - for no particular reason, they will just drop a large branch.

I'll never forget a windless day when a big ol' eucalyptus suddenly shed a 10" thick branch on my friend's brand new VW Camper!

He was a wee bit upset! :D

I was rewarded with the following sights so it wasn't all bad!!!

Great pictures!

Yeah, Mete, I have large trees around my house, 60-foot maples, they provide great shade in the summer...I can't bear to take them down. Besides, maples have a very deep and widespread root system, they don't tend to topple like evergreens. Maples do drop limbs, I have to watch out for that.

I thought I saw the Loch Ness Monster in one of those pics!!

NESSY!!!

That takes me back to my childhood! When I was a kid my grandparents would take me to Scotland every year and I'd spend hours looking out over Loch Ness with my binoculars.............never did see it!!!:(

and it would really suck if there was a cougar IN the tree that fell on you!!!!!

Crpies, that two foot+ of snow is nearly gone, how unfortunate.:(

Do you think that the trees are coming down so easy due to the fact they aren't used to snow? At least to that degree. Around here it just get all pretty and ya might lose a limb or two.

It's not always due to bad weather either...

Years ago my wife and I were camping in CA in the summer amongst some huge oak trees. As we were sitting around the fire on a dead calm night, all of a sudden there was a huge BOOM...CRASH that shook the ground. I about jumped out of my skin. No more than 15 yards away from us a 10" diameter, 20' long limb had snapped off at the trunk. The break was as loud as a stout gunshot that left our ears ringing. I've looked with suspicion at large limbs over our campsites ever since.

Here's one that fell from a cliff onto a portage I had already went across once, the next trip across was with the canoe, we had to help it the rest the way down to get through. Glad I wasn't under that spot with the canoe when she fell it was a tight spot any way and stepping off to the right would of been a no no.

I was walking around at the edge of the river in town here and noticed alot of chew marks on the trees near by. I guess there are some beavers that like to set man traps. Those tree's were gnawed away pretty good, i walked away after that, they looked as though they'd snap and topple over with a strong breeze.
