More difficult: Hollow or Flat?

I do both, and to me, the flat grind is the most difficult to do.

I recommend learning to do both. Practice, practice, and then practice some more. The more time you spend making sparks at the grinder, the better your grinds will be.

I agree. I started with flat then the hollow grinding came really easy. ;)

Flat grind is much harder for me. The transision line is very diffucult to keep straight. With a hollow grind you get a grove to set on the wheel to help keep seady.

I agree with IG. I first started on a couple Hollow and gave it up pretty quick. The majority of my blades are Flat and just recently started messing with Hollow AGAIN.....and it us much easier now than when I first started making knives.

Robert hit it on the nose though....Practice, Practice, Practice.

For me it was harder to learn to do a good hollow grind that it was to flat grind when I first started. Now I can hollow grind very well with little effort, but I have to concentrate a lot more on my flat grinds to get them to turn out right. I guess I would have to say Flat grinding is harder to do right.

To me hollow grinds look so difficult that I have never attempted it! When I started, I would convex grind (not very cleanly though). Now I flat grind everything. Most people seem to say that hollow grinding is easier, maybe I'll try it someday.

Definitely Flat Grinds are tougher for me.I started out with the Hollow Grind ( with the intention of trying to master the "toughest grind "first ) WRONG !! Like others have said, maintaining symmetry is tougher on the Flat Grind for me too. It did get better after purchasing a ceramic platen ( Darren Ellis at "Ellis Custom Knife Works" ) for my KMG.Convex is the easiest grind for me to complete ( using a strip of an old "mouse pad" as backing on my platen.

Flat grinding is more challanging but they all have difficulties. If it was easy everyone would do it. Make the sparks fly and it will come. :D
