More exotic shields...

I've been noticing a lot lately, how much shields play into my traditional folder interests... whether its a good shape for the pattern shape, too big or too small, or even(although rarely) wrong for the jig or color.

But also, I've been looking at just whats out here for shapes, both current and older. Sure, there are the standard bars, and actual shield shaped shields... But lately its struck me how many more "Exotic" shapes there are; the beavers and roses on new GECs, the dogs head on older Kabars, the lever action and flintlock rifles on RRiders. I think some older Winchester knives had the lever action shield too. The famous Remington Bullet, usually a 30-06/bottle neck cartridge, but also some other cartridges were done. Scagel and the arrowhead comes to mind.

So, got any examples I've missed? Or, Do you have a favorite specialty or exotic shield? Are there any cusom makers doing special shields?

(pics more than welcome! ;) )

"Price Guide To Romance of Knife Collecting" - Mrs. Dewey P. (Lavona) Ferguson
1978 and 1979 Editions

Both have about 15-20 pages of shields. This is one of the few references I have found containing a compilation of shields.

There are also the diamond, bollock, and girdle shields. And don't forget one of the most infamous shields in recent memory, the Case mushroom from the just released "Smurf" series.

:D

I heard that the "mushroom" is supposed to be an "Ulu" knife. But it seems upside down if so. - Ed

I've always thought that a "spade" would be cool. As in the ace of spades from a deck of cards.

An unusual one on old knives was the battle axe shield - I think I've seen it on both NYKCo and WHMorley knives. Maybe I've got a pic around somewhere.

An NYKCo equal end whittler.

I was going to mention the battle axe, also. I think a silhouette of Micky Mouse would be good on some items. ;)

Thanks, Pat. I did not know that.

And here I thought I had an original idea.:o

I have never seen one but I bet it looks pretty cool.

Thanks for the info.

Being a proud Canadian, I could hardly turn down this beauty the first time I laid eyes upon it. I apologize for the crude photo, it's the middle of the night and the light is bad.

I saw a similar shield on an elephant toe....maybe stag.....maybe fight'n rooster. I just can't recall exactly. Those are neat.

Bulldog actually made knives with all of the suits in a deck of cards, Spade,Club, Diamond and Heart. Theu can be seen in some of the Old Pocket Knife Traders Price Guide by Jim Parker.

Battle Ax knifes out of NC had knives imported from Germany with a very similar shield in the 80"s and 90's. They ocasionally show up on the "bay".

That axe is sweet! had not seen the bowie either, but had heard of that...

Thanks for the link Christian!
I'm not sure about that shield, but love the blue stag, cool look!

Rick, there is also a cheap import brand(made in R.Rider factory I'd bet) with spades too, also done in all four suits.. I too didn't know bulldog had done it.
