So I tried a hamon on some 1095 I had and it didnt come out how I wanted. Was way too close to the edge. I realized it was my error in apllying the clay and decided to redo it. This time as Im cleaning the scale off I can see where the clay was very distinctly and after I cleaned it off with some 220 I can actually feel a slight height difference where the clay line is. It is very easy to see also. Never really heard of this so asking what yall think? Planning on just sanding it down nice and level then progress with grits but this made me very curious why I can feel the hammon line like that

Remember that a hamon very rarely follows the clay. The clay does not determine the location of the hamon, it just helps control heat. Some guys with lots of experience and talent can "design" the look of their hamon using the clay, but there is still going to be a lot of variability.

The line you're seeing/feeling that follows where the edge of the clay was is most likely the result of scale/decarb.

I've felt a height difference after cleanup before, too. Most often it happened with blades that had been water quenched, the hardened steel at the edge would be a bit proud of the softer steel at the back. My assumption was that it's caused by the same effect as sori; the martensite at the edge having expanded and locked at that size, the back not having done so. I've seen it be pretty pronounced.

Sounds like what happened for m. Went back to 190 grit and sanded it all down and will work my way up and hope for a good hamon!

Sometimes when you think you have sanded your fanny off and nothing has happened, you just need to sand a little more, or maybe a lots more. That is what makes this journey so much fun.

Don't give up..........If it don't work, then start over. That is how we all get better.
