So, after using my HEST diligently for the last month or two, it makes me wonder, why stop at one knife? Could RYP make a very similar blade with slightly wider scales that is 4-5 inches long? Still maintain the low profile for a nice EDC or companion style blade but make it longer? I bet alot of people would buy it, as an alternative to the thicker bladed, thicker handled RC4/RC5...

From what RYP said when the HEST came out, there will be three (or four?) more versions of the HEST produced in the future. Unfortunately he didn't give many details regarding design or time line.

I wonder if they are gonna be the same item but with slight differences (say size variance) or something more drastic such as different tools or a divergent blade shape.

Yes there will be another in the series of RAT DPx knives. I was just in Afghanistan working with people who do certain things for a living and designing the RAT DPx H•E•F•T. (Hostile Environment Fighting Tool). Its a 6 inch blade with that same balance and that same ergonomic feel. As the military knows the bayonet and fighting knives were used mostly for opening ammo boxes, camp duty and cutting that sticking into the bad guys :)

The H•E•S•T is an EDC that is a lot more knife that most other 3" blade delivers but it feels and handles bigger.

The DPx H•E•F•T product and target market is different and the application much different. Mostly military, law enforcement and special operations and for those who need a 6" blade in a hostile environment but still need a functional day to day edged tool.

I had a blade prototype built in Afghanistan's Panjshir valley to my specs and have been working on different handle ergonomics. The trick is create a extremely rugged blade that is also featherweight in the hand, balanced in deployment and can survive the abuse expected in severely kinetic conditions.

The next step is to savagely test the product in the real world so that when it goes into production we have the input and approval of seasoned pros. You will also have the construction quality, made in America comfort and rock hard guarantee of RAT Cutlery behind it. Jeff and Mike are busy boys so its also about when they have time to provide their input and sage advice.

I also look forward to tips, ideas and input from RAT DPx H•E•S•T owners since it just makes for a better and more innovative product.

Awesome, thanks for the input sir. I look forward to see pictures of the knife. I love my HEST so much... I need to get a job so I can start working my way through more of your books as well. I'm fascinated by what you do.

It's great to hear some details about this H.E.F.T Thanks for keeping us in the loop, RYP.

Hey I would be happy to test any prototypes here at FOB Sykes Iraq, and give you feed back of course

As said above, thanks for the info RYP. I certainly look forward to seeing the H.E.F.T.
( Though thankfully my days of requiring a fighting tool are in the past

I only got my H.E.S.T. a couple of days ago, but Im very impressed with the design and how it handles. As I said in another thread, Im sure this little knife is capable of punching way above its weight.

I'm considering the H.E.S.T. for my second RAt knife, but I still don't know what to think about the pry bar in the handle. I'm waiting for more reports to come in. You see, I'm a klutz and don't want to poke my eye out...:o:D

From my perspective the pry tip does not get in the way at all. I am a very medium size dude. ("Wait, can one be "very" medium sized?" "Yes, yes one can.")

Do not fear the prybar...:)))

I like mine sharpened to screwdriver-like tip (slightly squared at the tip), they can be sharpened to scraped kindling, open cans, puncture metal etc. I give it a couple of strokes with a file and it can be either sharp or squared off. Even though the RAT DPx H•E•S•T has the thickest blade I have seen in a three inch EDC, even I can't bring myself to use the edge as a chisel, prybar or metal puncher.

I suggest finding a stocking dealer and getting your hands on one to decide.

The prybar is out of the way and low profile, I don't know how you could injure yourself with it. I really like it. It makes the grip really secure.

Thank you for the heads up on the H•E•F•T. I am also one who has not purchased the H•E•S•T because of the prybar. Can you tell us if the H•E•F•T will have a prybar? Or any other design details that differentiate it from other 6" knives? Looking forward to seeing the H•E•F•T come to fruition.

the prybar is unique to the RAT DPx H•E•S•T . The H•E•F•T will have it's own unique features :)

The prybar is not in the way. I carry the HEST in just about the worst place: vertical on a Tek-Lok at 8:00. If I lean over or lie on my left side, I can feel it press against my side. But the prybar doesn't jab me.

In hand, it is a positive benefit, like a bird's beak butt, it keeps my hand in place, sabre or reverse grip. And I have a pretty big hand, but it isn't cramped.
