Several years ago I received my grandfathers hatchet. It is in pretty rough shape. The head still seems fine but needs some love. I am now a first time homeowner. I want to get it back in shape so i can put it back to use again. So i want to know more about it. I'm curious to know more about it, when it was made, where. I think the head is a lot older than the handle as it appears to have been made by a blacksmith. It doesn't appear to have a lot of use/abuse. I just want to make sure the best course of action. I am good with tools, I just don't want to do damage. I understand the handle is too rotten to use. What would a suitable replacement be? I really like the narrow concave grind profile. It Seems like it just wants to cut again. Thanks in advance.

Can't see the pictures, but I can say if you thought about soaking it in vinegar don't.
Use a wire wheel instead.

Thanks for all of your help. Literally nobody was of any use whatsoever.
Are there any maker's marks?
What makes you think it was hand made by blacksmith?
It is not classic example but you may call it Hudson Bay pattern.
Can you show us pictures of the eye? Are there any ridges inside the eye?

Just get a replacement handle and rehang it. It’s pretty simple once you find one that fits the eye. If I want to clean up my axe heads I use a orbital sander it works fine.
