I sent these to Dan some months ago with an email "Getting in line." All I knew was that I wanted ironwood handles and a subhilt, and didn't give Dan much more info than that. We decided on copper for the metal work.
Chiruwa handles give Dan more metal to work with, so that was what was picked. The buttcap on the chiruwa is actually mortised for the chiruwa tang. I wanted to send him a big 18" Chiruwa AK, but the ones I had already had beautiful handles. So I sent him the 15" 25 oz. AK Bowie, which frankly had a very poor handle, and a little 15" 23 oz. AK that had a pretty bad horn handle. It was crooked and not too well fitted, but the blade was first class.
So, it comes as kind of a 15" matched set. The chiruwa balances just in front of the cho, and the bowie just in back of it. Dan made the guard and buttcap a bit bigger on the bowie to balance it better. For camping or carrying, either should be pretty portable, but give some good chopping power as needed. The AK would also be great for all sorts of camp chores, at least chopping up big chunks of meat anyway!
Next year when I get some more bandwidth I'll be looking for an 18" AK or maybe Chiruwa BGRS to send to Dan for similar treatment, but with some kind of darker wood. For now, I can't wait to play with these.
BTW, I asked Dan to post this pic, as he didn't want to have people think he was tooting his own horn. I know he is working on Bowies for several other people, each of who have their own custom requests, and am looking forward to seeing those when done.
Thanks,
Norm
