Sorry to keep buggin ya folks! I had a couple of more khuk questions. I was using my 15.5" AK out in the yard today and really enjoyed it. To my surprise, it actually eclipsed my small wetterlings mini hatchet in most every regard!

I've been pondering on getting a slightly smaller one for 'big knife' jobs when in the woods. The caveat is it has to be just a bit lighter so that I'll actually be willing to carry it. My current AK is great, but pretty damn large. So I was hoping you folks could help me with a few questions!

Now, I really love the balance and curvature of the AK. It just feels good. So I don't know how the Pen knife will differ there.

-Would a 12" AK or a 12" Pen knife chop better?

-Will the 12" AK weigh dramatically more?

-Which will do better at plain knife tasks (plain slicing, fuzz sticks, etc)? [I am never without a ~4" belt knife so that last part is not of huge importance, the ability to chop and baton through wood is paramount.]

So basically I need a khuk that is slightly lighter and a bit smaller than my current AK, that will also out-chop my little Wetterlings mini hatchet. I'm open to other models than the Pen knife and AK too, but the AK's aethetics are most appealing.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Spooky, yer gonna make me dig out an AK and a Pen and do a side-by-side for you, aren't you? :D

Unfortunately, I won't have time.

Keep in mind that my opinions are free and stinky.

Do you have a CAK, or a regular AK? I ask, because I prefer the non-CAK, or the one with the rat tail tang. They are a bit lighter, I think they are better balanced, and fatigue the hand less than the full tang models.

The Pen is a straighter khuk than the AK, straighter than just about any other model. It is also thinner. So, comparing similar length knives, the Pen will be lighter. But, I really like the way they chop, even compared to an AK.

The BAS and WWII models are also very good camp knives in the 16-18" range.

Sorry, I didn't address the 12" part..... I don't have much in the way of 12" khuks. I do have a 12" Pen. I don't have a 12" AK though, so I can't compare those sizes directly. I would bet though, that they don't differ all that much in chopping ability at the 12" size.

I have a 12" AK with horn handle that I really like. It chops as well as any other 12" long knife, maybe even better. The recuve is great for a draw knife and I've stripped a few small logs with it before. :)

i was thinking about the same thing the other day and thought the bonecutters would fill that hole nicely. i havn't had the pleasure of holding one yet though.

When I get my just purchased 12inch/12ounce Bonecutter I will post some impressions but the closest Khuk I have to compare it with is a 15inch/19ounce Chitlangi if that will be of any help?

The 12" PK is a great camp knife that will chop really well. I like the 12" AK better for splitting duty, though. I'll also second the 12" UBE if you require a strong pointy tips:thumbup:

Spooky,

I have a box on my front porch with stuff I'm sending you to try out incl a 17" Ganga Ram.

Do you want me to send you my 12" AK and 12" Pen Knife to try too? That way you can know for sure.

Ha! You da man amigo. I'd love to play with them, but send me your paypal again so I can pay for the shipping. It'll cost a few moras worth of dough to ship that beast! If that aspect is prohibitive then no worries on withholding.

The postage is on me.

Hey Spooky,
That's a hard call for me. I have a 12" Pen, ( that I bring everywhere as it fits in all my bags and is so light on the hip), and a 12" UBE that I just love to carry and use,(though i admit I baby it more than the others:) ). They are so effective yet weigh so little compared to our bigger khuks. I have the use also of my Holly's 12" AK,( her fav for camp chores and driftwood fence trimming), and her 12" Siru,( her fav for cutting strangler vines from our trees while high up a ladder).

I'll chop and take some pics when my oldest gets back from Toronto this weekend as she snagged ALL of the cameras:o

I love chopping with my Pen when camping and friends and family say things like...gosh that's a big knife...:D and I say...gee, I brought the little one because it's so light;)

HD, you rock and roll:thumbup:

My 12" villager finish CAK (chiruwa/fulltang Ang Khola) is a sweet knife, not too big, definitely not to small for 'smaller big knife/chopper' jobs. I love it.

Wow, I guess that I am the odd man out. I have a 12" Kesar AK, and I have not found a good use for it. At that size I would much rather have a straight bladed knife. I find that it doesn't chop that well, but I still pay a weight penalty. And the handle is too small for my medium sized hands. Move up to something 14-15" long and a khuk becomes a khuk and not a bent knife (at least that's my 2 cents).
Advice worth what it cost (nothing)

Only khukurites can grok the concept.....

UD have you registered the term "khukurites" yet?:D

I bet it could come into common usage there with a little assistance. I'm happy to use the term and see how the response goes.;)

ps. It has been decades since I last read the word 'grok.' The late Robert A. Heinlein was one of my favourite sci-fi authors.
