More knife control stupidity

I live in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. As of late, we have the highest murder rate in Canada. As an attempt to "control" this, our mayor and police chief recently got together to discuss stategies for this issue.

A proposed upcoming proposal is to ban all edged " weapons." I am pretty sure this is being pushed by the mayor as he has spoken of this in the past.

As Canadian law stands now, we have standard prohibited knives like balisongs, auto-openers,and push-knives. Any other knife OR OBJECT is not deemed a weapon unless it is used as such.

On a radio program today , a painter asked if the utility knife he uses at work can place him under breach of the law ( if it takes effect.) What about my lawnmower blade I'm taking down the road to the sharpening shop? My machete to clear my trees? Knife to free a tangled dog? My fillet knife in my tackle box?

My point is this type of political thinking really P's me off. AS IF any law against knives is going to stop the bad guys. The last few murders where shootings with handguns, a supposedly highly controlled and restricted item. One stabbing with 3 against one. So much for our gun registry( so far a 3 billion dollar fiasco)

I don't advocate breaking the law , but if they do pass some sort of law here, I don't know how it will be enforced or what kind of restrictions there will be, but so far , it's looking like an all-encompassing ban to be handed down in September.

I guess I better find a pail , throw out my $6000 knife collection, axes, lawnmower blade , hacksaw, kitchen knives, razor I shave with, and the new Peanut I just bought my son for his 9th birthday.

Now I guess only the bad guys will have knives and I'll have nothing to cut stuff with.

I would like to hear some opinions on this whether you're from Canada or not , and what knife laws some of you folks have to deal with.
Thanks,
Pete

Note: I just realized I should have put this thread in the Knife law section. If it needs to be moved there by Mod , Please do so.
Thanks

Knives are not allowed in prisons, yet people get shanked. Sure more shankings would happen if everyone had a blade, but point is, a weapon will be made or found by those determined enough to cause harm.

My ASP baton is not an edged weapon, but it sent an attacking Pitbull home with his tail and head tucked. I didn't want to get close enough to stab the dog, nor did I want to get blood on me. Point is, I could kill someone or thing with a rock, baseball bat, my car, poison, a gun, etc. etc..
Knives are not the bad guys, but are the scapegoat.

Here's what they don't get:

An "edged weapon" is essentially any piece of metal sharpened with an edge. This can be a piece of sheet metal or rebar or even a spoon if sharpened correctly. Furthermore, such edged weapons are small and highly concealable. There is quite literally no way this prohibition would be helpful to anyone unless they can enforce it(with say, metal detectors installed in every major public transport system and in the inside of every single public building). Unless the police plan on strip searching every person to pass by, this law only affects those who abide by the law.

Criminals could give two sh**s about breaking the law.

Regular everyday objects are considered weapons if used as such. It's the "intent" that makes it so. In my mind, knives aren't any different. Whether I get attacked by a knife or a baseball bat I'm still being attacked , or if I'm shot at with a registered or un-registered weapon.

Even still, you can cut with wood, ceramic, glass, plastic, a leather whip, rocks, diamonds, and other materials that would pass through a metal detector. Eventually a jagged fingernail would be illegal with their mentality.

Wood, plastic, and diamonds are a bit of a stretch(not too mention diamond blades are a bit pricey). Rock would make a nice blunt weapon. Ceramic blades are usually impregnated with enough metal to set off a metal detector(required by law). Though glass and obsidian would make one hell of a sharp blade, provided it's protected well enough so it doesn't shatter on you(works fine for most people though).

I can sort of see the general idea. Human behavior can't be regulated by law, no matter how hard you try. And the public always wants "the authorities" to do something, so they do something to give the impression that they're actually DOING something.

I've had a theory that these people who make rules, regulations, and policies make these stupid decisions because their 6 figure income certainly won't be paid if they do nothing, even if doing nothing is ultimately better than doing something stupid, so they opt for the latter option to screw millions of others over just to save their own worthless ass.

I totally agree with this. My feelings exactly.

I think politicians can do a far better job than outlawing knives..they could introduce some tougher/harsher penalties for anyone doing crime, or three strike penalties, I don't know. These politicians should stop and think first before introducing a stupid law that affects the people that uses knife in a good way than the bad. Man, I just hope this shit doesn't become real or else more who knows more provinces might join in and ban pocket knives all together...

MORE STRICT THE LAWS AND REGULATIONS ARE, MORE CRIMINALS THERE WILL BE.

I agree that if this law is passed it will cross a line. Of they would ban them, they wouldn't be illegal to own, just to carry. They wouldn't expect people to throw out their kitchen knives but it means you can't carry one. It would impossible to ban all knives. It may work though, we have a lot less gun problems the the states.

This chief shouldn't be in the police force if he so upset by the shock factor of weapons used in crime. These people react rather than deal with the problem. Its not the knife or weapon that needs banning, its the criminal behavior that needs adressing. With all the knee jerk reactions that result in bans, these result in fewer choices and our lives become increasingly diminished each time the pen signs these kinds of laws.

I am sure that in 5 or 10 years from now all pocket knife carry in Canada will become banned, as selfish nuts like this chief get their way, and they almost always do. That leaves us with the only option, non compliance. How does one enforce such a broad unpopular law? Like firearms laws here, many have chosen to ignore the new regs, and that will be the only power the people here will ever have.

Want less crime? Have less laws...

Edmontonians will only feel safe when the law compells me to transport my SAK in a locked box in the trunk of my car.

[...]Rock would make a nice blunt weapon.[...]

It takes minimal skill to turn agate, obsidian, many similar rocks, or the bottom of a beer bottle into a very sharp knife, using a little skill called "flint-knapping". Are the idiots going to try to ban rocks, or make flint-knapping illegal?!

Before Metallurgy existed, knives were made out of rocks and bone for thousands of years. How can you ban rocks, or cutting implements at all? People NEED to be able to cut things. What if you are in an automobile accident and trapped by your seat belt? I'm not going to die because some idiot in government banned "sharp edges".

Anyone considering "violence" that thinks banning the carry of any inanimate object (guns, knives, baseball bats, hammers, pencils, rocks, or w/e) will do ANYTHING but give criminals the edge are incompetent and should not be allowed to hold a public office. Period.

Criminals aren't going to hurry up and turn in their guns, knives, baseball bats, etc. the second some idiot passes a law banning them, because they aren't as stupid as politicians, apparently.

Stand up for your right to use your tools for their intended purpose, save someone in an emergency, and especially self-defense against criminals, packs of feral dogs, wild animals and tyrannical governments. Don't be a victim.

I personally think everyone should carry a knife. Otherwise have fun opening that tough plastic packing, moron (or asking to borrow MY knife because you know I carry one... NOPE)!
