More knives or a Wicked Edge?

Im at a crossroads. Im new to knives and in the past few weeks I purchased a handful of nice knives. At least they are nice to me. My dilemma is, should I buy a few more knives or get a Wicked Edge? I have a Sharpmaker right now. Im not the greatest with it, but getting better. Got my first shaving edge yesterday with it. I bought a Belomo loupe and the edge looks ok, nothing great compared to what I see on here. I know with some practice people have great results with this system as a maintenance tool.

The question for me is, is the edge that the Wicked Edge is capable of producing(with some practice of course) that good, or should I save the money and practice on my sharpmaker and buy some more knives?

Anyone have any opinions?

Get an Edge-Pro or Wicked Edge. I have both and they work quite well.

The WE is a bit easier to use. Accessories are a bit more expensive

The EP is more versatile. Accessories a less expensive.

I use and enjoy both, but the EP sees a bit more use due to it's versatility.

Get the WE. The edges it can produce (after a couple practice sharpenings) are addicting. I would also recommend the upgraded arms and coarse and fine ceramics. You can make your own strop or buy one pretty cheap.

+1 what phillllllll said. Watch a couple more videos on youtube about the sharpmaker...you'll get better with it. buy a piece of horsehide and make a strop, or buy one for $20. Springfield leather sells horeshide (horse butt) in small sizes, and you can make a few stops.

What every you decide, take a look at Jdavis882 on youtube. He has a wicked edge vs edge pro video and on on the sharp maker. Personally I want a wicked edge...

I'm in the same boat. I wound up with a bunch of good knives over a short period of time. I bought a Sharp maker with the UF stones as well. Fact is, I'm too spastic to maintain those knives on a Sharp Maker. I chose the Edge Pro over the WE, even though the WE may be a little better. Fact is, I probably won't NEED a good sharpening system for awhile. I bought it because I want to get started on my sharpening skills. I could have easily waited a few months and bought more knives. I would just like to get up on the learning curve.

There's no right answer to your question. It's up to you how you fill your list.

Buying a wicked edge has changed the way I feel about and use my knives.

Knowing that I can turn any damaged edge into a hair whittling masterpiece when I get home gives the confidence to use my knives much harder than when I only had a sharpmaker!
Now everyday is like science fair, can my knife handle cutting fiberglass insulation all day? Let's find out! If it's dull I can fix it no problem!

I usually use my WEPS to reprofile my knives and then add a microbevel with my sharpmaker, this makes the edge more stable and a breeze to touch up.

Highly recommend the WEPS in conjunction with a sharpmaker!

Buy the sharpener...

Charge friends and neighbors to sharpen their knives...

Buy more knives! :)

JDunn709 makes a great point, it gives you freedom to use your knives.

I enjoy my EP immensely, any edge I want is just waiting for me.

I had the great experience of watching a guy with his first use of the EP, there is a learning curve with any method or system out there. Best thing for me was the ability to do my own edges, not have more knives to dull and send out for sharpening. I was lucky and had a forum member send me a box of gas station knives to practice on.

Im thinking I will go with the sharpener. Next dilemma, ball joint arms or not? lol

I don't think I could justify 150 extra bucks for those. The standard arms with the angle cube would probably be just fine, although Im kind of a buy once, cry once type of buyer.

Buy the Wicked Edge. Long lasting stones. Easy to restore the same edge to a blade that you sharpen previously on the WE. Relatively short learning curve. While I like both the EP and WE, I find myself using the WE all the time now.

I ordered the Wicked Edge Pro Pack 1 today. I also went for the ball joint arms and an angle cube as well. Now I wait. I guess it will give me time to round up a dozen or so knives to practice on. :)

You made a great choice:thumbup: remember to practice on some cheap knives first before moving to your nicer ones! Take your time and don't rush, you will get some nice edges after a little while
