Since I didn't want to hijack Beoram's very worthy thread, I had to start my own. Please excuse me if this looks like copycatting.
I heard about The Himalayan Cataract Project a few years ago, when some people who'd contributed to it, gave a presentation at REI. I've been wanting to tell the Forum about them for a while, but I never got around to looking up the info. (Thanks, Beoram, for giving me the kick in the pants that I needed.)
Apparently, cataracts are REAL health problem in Nepal, with a huge percentage of the older population being partially or totally blind. The HCP has apparently refined a kind of cataract surgery with a hyperfast recovery rate, and has been performing the surgery with enough success that they've apparently expanded to other countries.
If anyone in the kamis' families ever needs this surgery, I hope that we've helped them to be able to afford the trip.......
