I grabbed these two when the department I work for cleaned out the conficated property locker. The Switchblade is poorly constructed and satmped only with 'Stainless Italy' on it the butterfly is fairly well made and stamped '440 stailess' Anyone have any info on them?

Hopefully, I inserted the picture right. If not I'll try again.

Normally, "440" means 440A. If it were the more expensive 440C, they would brag about it and mark it so.

The auto is a C.Jul. Herbertz by Rostfrei. The blade is 440.

I have a few examples I picked up at a Flughafen Frankfurt am Main shop in the late 70s.

I love that airport because it used to have a museum of WWII german planes on the roof and they had a Me-163 Comet.

Awful knives though, just tourist grade. :)

Yeh the switchblade is a true piece of crap, but hey, it was free and looks kinda cool. The lock is super-crappy nnd it looks like you can snap the blade like a pencil.

I tracked down the maker of the butterfly. Its a 'Steel Ocean' and sells for between 15$ and 35$ depending on which web sight you go to. Not a high-end knife but not the worst blade I've ever seen either. For a knife that didn't cost be a cent, I can't complain

Don't get me wrong, I saved my butt by brandishing a cheap Rostrfrei once in Las Vegas. It only has to look dangerous. One of the good things about a knife is that you can show it without having to use it. No violence resulted, it just allowed me to escape. I don't even sharpen autos.

Wasn't commenting on the bali, it looks like a decent knife.

Yea, the Rostrfrei does look cool. It'll wind up in my box of junk knives that I've accumulated over the years. I often by cheap knives just because I like the way they look

When you need a knife, any knife is better than no knife at all.

Hello! It's my understanding that the words Rostrfrei or rostfrei are not brands of knifes, but rather a German word meaning "stainless", indicating the blade is stainless steel. Rostrfrei as in rust free.

correct!

I wondered about that as well. I have a really, REALY cheap buttlerfly knife that says that Rostrfrei on it too. Strange thatthe swithblade in question is marked Italy, and has the german word for rust free on it. I just have this thing about knowing as much as possible about the knives in my collection, even the super-crappy ones.

"rostfrei" means "stainless" in German. It means nothing more.

knarfeng, I thought I just said that? ::) By the way, the switchblade marked rostfrei and Italy, is most likely a chinese made knockoff. The put Italy on them to fool customers

I went to that museum in '76. Whatever happened to it?
