The way I usually do it...Draw on the bar stock with a paint marker then drill around it then cut the space in between the holes. Then grind down the burrs and chunks until I get the desired shape. These will be reverse tanto/hooked blades. This way is way tooo long and time consuming...arrggh !

I can't even imagine cutting out 20 such curvy profiles the way your're doing it. If they gave gold stars for hard work, we'd have to open a new mine on your behalf! Amazing.

Good work, my hat's off to you.

Dave

Thanks Darrel and Dave, much obliged ! Yeah, it's a total pain in the ass but it's the only way I can do this right now. I think I'll have someone laser cut them for me from now on as I'll save a lot of time and energy as well as increase productivity. Imagine Dremeling the spaces between the drill holes in 1/4" thick steel just to brake the shapes out and grind the burrs and chunks down. Anyway, thanks again, take care.....RDT

Get on the phone and find a local welding shop [or a friend] with a plasma cutter! Spend your time making knives, not hundreds of holes :)

When you get the blanks back, heat to non-magnetic and bury in a countainer of kitty litter and leave them there overnight.

Next morning you will have some soft blanks and can make some knives.

Keep posting pics for us!

Dave

Hi Dave,
what does the kitty litter do for it ? that sounds wacky !? Yeah, I think a plasma cutter wouold be great. A friend was mentioning Bailey Bradshaw can cut em' and at a reasonable fee. Thanks guys.....RDT

Kitty Litter [Grocery Store], or Vermiculite [Garden Store], or very fine stove ash acts as an insulator to hold the heat in the steel and make it cool very slowly- like several hours.

The slow cooling anneals the metal and makes it soft.

Draw your lines about 1/4 inch oversized. The plasma cutter leaves a very hard 'drip line' inside the cut that will wear out belts or arms in a hurry. Softening makes it easier to remove the drips and profile your blade.

Keep those pics comin'.

Dave

Make sure you keep the cat away from it though...
Some cool looking stuff happening Rich...I got my own little K project boiling over too, very different to yours (which is good). :)

Thanks Ferret, post some pics of yours when they're done too. take casre.....RDT

Last night I took a hacksaw to 1/4" 154CM. I can certainly sympathize.

Nice looking blades, by the way.

Thanks Krept, yeah...I tried the hacksaw about a year back. Decided that with my limited funds I'd stick with the Dremel and hole drilling until I can get someone to cut em' for me or find a better more efficient way to do it. Good luck and thanks.....RDT
