Dennis (Shootist16) posted pics of some of the new products for 2002 from Timberline, and here are some more quick scans:

This is the Greg Lightfoot Mini Pitbull, possibly a neck knife. 6" OAL. AUS-6M steel. Kraton and Zytel scales. MSRP $39.95. Includes multi position Zytel sheath.

And here is the Vallotton Kickstart EMT. 3.5" AUS-6M blade, Zytel and Kraton interframe handle. MSRP $60

The folks that make Aus 6M must be jumping for joy as they rake it in. The EMT has a list of 120 bucks and uses 6M? If that is correct its laughable. Even discounted its still going to be in the high to mid 70 dollar range with 6M. I notice a trend here by lower end knife companies to cut costs and the use of Aus 6M seems to be the route. Spyderco just came out with the Lum Tanto fixed blade and it has a street price of 150+.00 and uses AUS 8. A steel a few years ago you saw aus 8 on cold steel products priced quite low. Now we accept it on a premium fixed blade??????

Mike - relax buddy :) I chopped off the text, and it might look like the EMT is $120 but it isn't. The Tim Herman Wall Street Tactical is the $120 knife, NOT the EMT :D

EMT is $60 MSRP

Yeah, if that AUS-8 happens to be designed, ground, and finished like the Lum. Which is to say that while AUS-8 isn't the absolute "greatest" steel out there, in the case of the Lum it's a part of an excellent overall package and no doubt of superb fit and finish, hallmarks of Spyderco's products.

Of course, you probably "need" something a lot better than lowly AUS-8, right?

Don't like it, don't buy it, simple as that.

AUS-8A is not a bad steel at all, and AUS-6 is a good steel to have on a $40.00 buck knife that will probably be available for $30.00 on the net.

Hey firebat, I am merely point out that in this economic environment, it would seem many knife companies are
balancing the budget by using less expensive and easier to grind steels. AUS-8 is plenty good. But its not 154CM or ATS-34 or VG-10 or BG-42, A-2 or D2. For a 165 bucks you used to get those. Times change. In firearms too, you seem to pay more and get less. 6M however is pretty much on the low end no matter how you cut it. The cold steels I mentioned were folders and their fixed blades that had rubber like handles. Not Micarta polished like the Lum, but the steel is what cuts, and at the time cold steel was and still is a modest cost knife. My point is still valid, new knives tend to come out in cheaper steels than a few year back.

I spoke with John Anthon today (yes, Saturday...he was in the office doing preps for SHOT ;) ) and got an update from him for the ETA of the new products. The latest word:

April 1st for the Terry Treutel fixed blade guthook skinner

March 1st for the Worden Supreme folder

Approximately 3 weeks from now the Lightfoot Mini Pitbull will be available.

On the GATCO side of things, John says he has a new sharpener called the Scepter. He describes it as an overgrown version of the Tri-Seps sharpener. The Scepter is 10" long and is medium grit diamond. There is a molded thermoplastic handle on it as well. Retail is $99

John also stated that Tim Herman's Wall St. Tactical is slated for delivery for June 1st and carries a price tag of $110. You have a choice of either burgundy or white micarta scales.

I will be receiving a CD of images from GATCO/Timberline of the new 2002 products and will post those that have not been posted already.

This is the latest from GATCO/Timberline!

Mike - no, you didn't overlook anything. I don't have pics of the Watt St. yet. Hopefully they will be on the disk that Timberline is sending me...if they are I will post here! I saw the proto of the knife at last year's Blade Show and it is quite impressive.

Thx Dexter-
I had the chance to fondle the Wall St. (Tim's version) at the NYC show last March (I think). Very Nice little knife. Even Phil had something nice to say about it. :p
Looking forward to the pix.
cheers,
Mike
