Hi

Once again I would like to have your opinion.

This time it's about training knives/sticks material.

For stick, do you prefer Rattan or Kamagong and why.

For knives, do you prefer a metallic knife or one made of wood. I already know I don't want rubber because the "blade" tend to bent when you try a disarm... well from what I saw. (It was a trainer for the Gerber Fairbairn Applegate).

rattan for sticks. cheap, easy to work. kamagong is getting rarer all the time. also, hardwoods break to a point, whereas rattan just comes apart in fibers. i got poked pretty good when a hickory stick broke during stick on stick drills.

metal for training knives. either aluminum or a real knife with the edge ground down. i like Keen Edge trainers. Norm's (forumite) stuff looks good, but i haven't seen any in person.

At the moment, 1 Canadian$ = 0.999498 usd :O

I think I'll buy my stuff really soon.

Rattan is great for basic training...just make sure it has an adequate thickness and weight for realism. Try to look for rattan with the natural skin still on it. It will last much longer that way.

Kamagong, however, is great too. In the Philippines, rattan is used as a training tool whereas kamagong is often used for real fights. Kamagong is great because its nice and heavy, which strengthens your grip and shoulder strength immensely. It's not too hard to find...go on ebay and you should find a few pairs of kamagong sticks. I personally train with Kamagong when training solo on the tire dummy.

As far as training knives go, I personally use a steel, dull Spyderco Delica trainer with the red handle. Aluminum knives are great for drilling. But, if you are starting out in FMA, I'd recommend a Sharkee knife (www.sharkee.com). They are made of plastic, and they just came out with an open folder model. They are real cheap and they don't flop around or bend like rubber knives do. They are also safe to use for sparring drills and the like.

i picked up a couple of the Sharkee 'folders'. nice size. the only advantage i saw over aluminum was the greater surface area on the tip for harder drills/sparring.

I like a wood training knife, not really sure why, I don't do that much knife work anyways. If I could get a training khuk I would be all over that(maybe I'll email Yangdu). Stick:D with ratan for your sticks, I've seen some people using hardwood (once even some sort of plastic) and they break, and when they do people get hurt.

Dan Koster suggested something once. Take a cheap plastic cutting board and shape a knife with it. Would be good too, if I had the tools and somewhere to work.
