Recognition of the International Federations (IFs)

In order to be recognised, these organisations must apply the Olympic Movement Anti-Doping Code and conduct effective out-of-competition tests in accordance with the established rules. The recognition of IFs newly recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) shall be provisional for a period of two years or any other period fixed by the IOC Executive Board. At the end of such period, the recognition shall automatically lapse in the absence of definitive confirmation given in writing by the IOC.

As far as the role of the IFs within the Olympic Movement is concerned, their statutes, practice and activities must be in conformity with the Olympic Charter. Subject to the foregoing, each IF maintains its independence and autonomy in the administration of its sport.

At http://www.olympic.org/uk/sports/index_uk.asp
We have a list of the actual Olympic games, which doesn't include the recognized sports mentioned above.

That kind of language makes my eyes bleed. Maybe someone else can make sense of it. What I got out of it was that officially recognized sports are not actually part of the games. This may be why the games are listed seperately from recognized sports, and why we never see any of those recognized sports broadcast on TV along with the games.

I'm not expecting to see Korfball in the lineup for the next Summer Games. (Although I've heard talk that China is pushing to have wushu included.)

Anyone want to explain this to me?

Check this out:

"A competitor who is overweight and cannot reduce his or her weight within one hour, shall not be allowed to compete."

Thats tough, man!
Even Atkins doesnt work that fast...

a good kukhri or katana can take care of that a lot quicker. one small drawback, you may not want to compete afterwards. deciding what to lop off may take up part of the hour, i guess....

Danny,

When I wrestled in high school guys would chew a pack of gum and spit the whole time. They could knock off a pound or more in an hour. Some guys had plastic bags sewn into their sweatshirts. (Wearing plastic was not allowed by our coach, so the guys really sewed bags into their sweatshirts.) Water weight can be lost very quickly at a very high risk. I bet they only gave an hour because if you gave a day a guy might try to get rid of 10 lbs.

I wrestled in jr. high and highschool as well. Mainly because my dad wanted me to. I just didn't have the killer instinct or drive to roll around with another dude in sweaty spandex undies. However, I do remember guys spitting off weight and running in trashbags. I also remember said guys getting to the 3rd period then having an entire muscle group locking up. I mean their whole body was just a knot. I never did that. Heck, if i was 1 lb over I had the coach bump me up a weight class. Sure, that meant i'd be wresting a heavy 172lb guy and i was 161. His 11lbs didn't have me that concerned. The only way i was going to win anyway was to throw a headlock. After that, Jake ran out of tricks. I had long strong arms and was a one trick pony:D I was so glad when track season rolled around.

Anyway, some of the stuff the are "sports" these days are laughable. In my mind, a sport requires physical activity that will wear you out over the long haul. Everything else is highly tuned (and very respectable) skill. NASCAR is not a "sport". These guys are brave and really understand their machines. However, I highly doubt that a NASCAR driver has to have the drive (no pun intended) to get up at 4am and hit the gym for 3 hours. I doubt that many of them go for 10 miles runs every morning. Like I said, highly respectable skill. You won't catch me doing 205mph in a car.

Now, the most sporty sport I have ever been a part of is being on a rowing crew. My God, what a work out. I did it for 2 years in college. That is plain painful;) That's the only game at the Olympics that I watch.

Steely,

I don't know about that (NASCAR). It takes a hell of a lot of endurance to drive one of those cars for those distances. I'm not a big fan of NASCAR racing, but I did do a course at a speedway in the military (a TOTAL blast... I highly recommend it to everyone). The environment you're in (heat, brake smoke/smell, vibration), the physical effort of driving a stock car, and the total concentration you have to maintain will test your endurance.

I don't know if they are hitting the gym or doing miles every day for training... but damn, I sure would be :)

On another note... I think it is outrageous that they took softball and baseball (?) out of the games. I think it is just retaliation against the US at this point. Pretty damn petty IMO.

I think you're right in that regard, Alan. I hadn't thought of that. Muscles have to trained in every line of activity. I always get a kick out of the guys the walk onto job site to work for my father that wear big time highschool football jocks. They usually last about a week, then they find out that all the squats and benchpress reps in the world will get you ready to finish concrete:D
I guess my big beef with NASCAR is that if i remember correctly there was a commercial spot a year or two ago where they were selling Stacker II or some other dangerous weight loss suppliment. Now, i know athletes use those all the time...at least the stupid ones do. I guess all athletes have their price and it has nothing to do with their sport. Like I said, I totally respect the drivers or anyone that has a remarkable skill. I just wouldn't call such things sport.
I totally agree about the Baseball and Softball thing.

Recognition doesnt make an olympic sport. I'd sure like it if they tossed equestrain out of the olympics though, or at least give the medals to the horses.

Danny are you saying you dont recognize Ice hockey as a legitimate sport? If so than thems be fighting words.
