I have two of these beasties and I really like them. I will probably be getting another. I do have a couple of observations on the ones I have.

The blade rubs the liner on the clip side of the knife. This is on both knives. Has anyone else run into this? On my carry knife, I did some Dremel woork to relief the liner on that side to reduce the rubbing.

The other is the back and forth plat when the knife is locked open. I am not referring to side to side play. That goes away with an adjustment to the pivot. The back an forth play is minute, but there.

Grind lines on the blades are not symetrical. This is a new experience for me with a Spyderco. Usually I can count on Spyderco and Microtech to be very precise on the grind of the blade on a given knife. However, on one of the Chinooks, the grind is off. In all fairness, it is only on the swedge. It is a cosmetic flaw, but it is still there.

Adding these things up still doesn't dampen my enthusiasm for this knife. Possibly these problems will be addressed as productions progresses or with some of the updates.

First off I would like to say I like the knife. I just got #669 today.
My grinds are good. The blade does rub on the right, pocket clip side. Not much really. I too note the front to back play. I think that this will work in. I think that once all the mating surfaces wear in a bit the lock up will be better.
The concern I have is what is up with the small lock spring? It looks way out of place on this knife. Mine is set in at an angle even. If it works, who am I to complain? But it does raise an eyebrow, so to speak. Over the years I have to come to trust SPYDERCO products. I am going to use this knife like any other trusted tool and see what comes of it.
I did note a bit of a burr on the end edge of the lock. In the area where it is depressed to unlock the blade. This was easily removed. It was more like flashing than anything more. May have been a product of the final finishing of the knife?

I must say that i can point out the petty imperfections mentioned above in just about all of my spyderco knives. They're not perfect. Mine should come in the mail any day now, and i should hope it's in good condition.

I just picked up Chinook #639 and looks great to me. The blade is not rubbing the liners and the grind is even. I am really glad that Spyderco made this knife a lockback. The old tried and true lockback can be very smooth when well made and still be much harder to flick than a liner lock. That may be important if the CKRT case leads to grief.

I just got mine in today. It's great! Grind lines are perfect, and it does not rub on the liner. No blade play at all...it locks with a loud CRACK!

I got #658 by the way...

This Chinook is one thick piece of Metal! Yes, I have noticed the swedge grind is uneven, but then of course the JAK signature is only on 1 side! Do you also consider this a production defect? ;-) Blade does not seem to rubbing the liner on mine..Maybe Spyderco will exchange 4U...

I would like to get a sheath for this Bad Boy, since it's obvious the G10 texture rubbing is going to wear out my jeans! Probably a little too heavy for that anyway.. This knife reminds me of the Sog Tomcat--big heavy blade! In the days when Kraton was all the rage..

It's sure going to frighten folks when I take it out for a toothpick after a big meal!

Also....

I used to think my Native was pretty good size, but this baby makes it look like a Dragonfly!

I am willing to put up with a few slight flaws because I am unable and unwilling to shell out the big bucks for a custom knife.. Of course with laser production methods, etc, there should be no issues, but maybe this is early production..

Whenever I get a new Spyderco, I always wash and oil it since there seems to be dust and production filings on it... WD40 is usually sufficient to help it break in properly..or Tri-Flow..

I have purchased 4 Spydercos in the last month--I am trying to get ones that look a bit different than all the rest. Jot Khalsa, Large Dyad, Chinook, and just for grins the small Centofante. Centofante is an Outstanding lightweight carry knife for the kind of light chores we all do..

Best to all my fellow Chinook owners, and remember:

"Ain't no Nookie like Chinookie!"
