Hi Uncle Bill,
I threw together a commander's call over here today for one of our troops
getting a medal, and another getting his sergeant stripes "pinned on".
Didn't even realize I was in some of the pictures one of my guys took with
the squadron's camera, but I was. Thought you might get a kick out of 'em so
here comes three separate e-mails for three pics ( I remembered from last
time). First pic, me chewin' some butt in the chow tent about ten minutes
prior to my commander's arrival (guy with the camera was pretty sneaky).
That black thing poking out from under my shirt on my left hip is nothing
less than a pre-Bir Ghorka, shop 2, BAS ;-)

looks like some of the hair is growing back...

Sarge = Your blade isn't dull, is it? ;)

Third pic, reading the medal citation for a young staff sergeant who earned
the medal prior to coming over for her work on the Theatre Battle Management
Core System ( which translates to you and me as; hi-tech computer gizmos).

More pics to come, maybe a road trip to Kabul, or some aerial shots from a
Chinook. We're taking it to the bad guys, but I'm sure you've heard about
some of our guys getting shot up pretty bad the other day. Sadly, this time
the media got it right. I know the details of that fracas, some of it pretty
aggravating, but I'll have to save it for another time. Maybe over a cold
Heineken.

You are right Pen. It is growing back but, that is still less hair than when Berkley and I met him in Austin. The other picture looked like he was in a bathroom some where when he did the shaved head bit before they took off to the Stan.:)

Yup, getting pretty fuzzy, waiting for the new moon to shave my head slick again, want to see if hair grows faster as the moon waxes. My knife getting dull? Them's fightin' words:D Actually, I've handled a steady procession of knives, sharpening them for other folks. Most are some stainless alloy, semi-serrated, etc., so I don't fool around, and go straight to the diamond hone/ceramics. My knives seldom need more than a few light strokes with a chakma prior to being stropped.
As far as eating good Pappy, I eat better here than I do at home. At home I have to do my own cooking. Guys grumble about the "off" color and taste of t-rations, but they've never tried my cooking:eek:

On a tin can you get used to eating stuff that can be cooked in a tub or tray. Things like eggs, steaks, burgers -- stuff that slides off the grill when the ship rolls and pitches become dreams. I got so sick of SOS I thought I'd never eat it again once I got back ashore.

Today I routinely buy the frozen SO and make my own S and eat it for breakfast or lunch.

I know where you're coming from, Sarge.

I'm with you Sarge. I never had any problem eating in the Marine Corps messhall. I heard plenty of complaints from some of the younger guys. I guess they thought that it should taste the same as what Mama made. I thought for what they had to work with they did a pretty damn good job. A lot of the spices they didn't have to work with.
The only time that I lost weight in the Corps was in the jungle. My wife just about crapped her britches when I got home, 6' and 135 lbs. and, that is with my clothes on.

I am going to have to get back to the regular excercise. I've climbed over the 200 mark and that is just a bit too much.

Take care over there and God Bless.:)

Thanks fer sharin. I hope the new sarge recovers from the pinning, if it's still done the same way, that can take some time for soreness to go away. Bet he's glad they pin to sholder, not hat!

Looks like some of the hair is growing back
Y'all shamed me about getting shaggy, so this morning I heated some water, stropped up my knife, and you can guess the rest.
Had a chuckle at the mess tent this evening. There was an angry mob gathered out front, and a much harried cook explaining that they were one server short of setting up the chow line, and couldn't open until he showed up. I stepped up and said I'd be more'n happy to serve chow. He looked at all the stripes on my sleeve and stammered something about it not being right. In response I took off my shirt and said; "see, now I'm just a server, let's get these people fed".
Imagine the look on my guys' faces when they came through the line.
At least this time no one grumbled about the "mystery meat".:)

A leader is foremost a servant. Sarge = you are an inspiration to me. Thanks.

I'm with Berk on this one.

Way to get important stuff done, instead of messing about.
The men under you must feel proud to serve with you.

Thanks for all the kind words guys, but don't make too much of it. It's easy to be humble when you look like I do. See pics above:eek:
