If I got the pix to post per usual we will let Major Mike do the commentary.

I think I got the title right this time. Too early for me first time around.

Nice range. Texas is so flat that you've always got to build your own backstop.

I was reading an article on rifle shooting in Switzerland, the have several ranges there that shoot from one hillside to the next, with a highway running in the valley under the path of the bullets. Now that's something that would never happen in the US these days

I think its the DMR, designated marksman rifle, that the major was talking about before. Its an m-14 w/ already in service match grade barrel and new synthetic stock. Cheaper than the m40 because the corps already has the expensive parts.

All are pictures on Okinawa.

Top and 2nd pictures; approximately 275 meters. The targets are outlines of various UXOs (unexploded ordnance) with their critical areas lightly shaded in. In the draw between the middle targets and between the far left and center left are various real targets.

3rd Picture is BZO at 100 meters. The MGySgt. is the bald one walking. Most of these Marines had never fired a rifle off a bipod, only belt fed area weapons. The concept of precision fire off a bipod vice a sling is a little foreign.

Last picture is of the 100-meter BZO targets.

The rifles are DMRs, Designated Marksmanship Rifle. Basically a tuned up M 14 from PWS in Quantico, in a McMillan stock, utilizing either a Leupold or Unertl scope in a GGG mount. Those who had never fired the M 14 before had heard that it kicked much worse than the M 16. All were of the opinion that the recoil wasn’t much more than their M 16s but the M 14 is much louder. Taking the scope and mounts off the loaded weight isn’t much more either.

As far as the XO I only got in 20 rounds. Didn’t want to unduly impact their training but a) I was invited to participate in the training and b) it is fun! I held my own, tying the CWO for high Smutting average by the time I had to leave, though they have forgotten to get me the final scores.

S/F, Mike

I like the new camo. From far away it looks like the old tiger stripe. Up close it looks like a plaid shirt. :)

In 1966, we were issued the M14 in boot camp. Still remember the rifle range and my score...221.

We sometimes talk about a spiritual bond with our K's here. The bond that formed with that rifle is hard to describe. Sort of like a third arm. Good to see it is still in use.
