I normally use some Japanese water stones to sharpen my tools, one side for knives and the other for chisels. I have a 800grit, 1200 grit and 6000 grit stones. What is a good sharpening sytem that is more portable.

I keep one of those flat red plastic diamond hones from Eze-lap in my wallet. Its all I use to touch up my pocket knives. If they just start to get dull, I'll strop them on the back of my belt. but if they get too bad, I'll take the hone out of my wallet and hone in small circles each side till its sharp. About five minutes work. Once you get used to it, its all you need. Just cut down the red plastic handle so its short enough to fit in your wallet.

for carry, i took the two little ceramic sticks out of a "mini crockstick", which is two little ceramic sticks stuck in a plastic thing so that you can just drag your edge through and it sharpens it. the angle is way too wide, so i just popped them out and keep them in my belt pouch. great for touch ups, but i sharpen my knives weekly at home on the real stone.

For backpacking, I sometimes carry a two-sided strop. The rough side has coarse compound, the smooth side has finer green compound.
