Hey Butch...

Send me an email... I got something cookin' and you might wanna smell it...

no point spending cash on something half way decent, then thats just more you need to save towards the KMG. have you looked into the KMG on a shoestring budget yet??
talk to dan koster about it.

$650 for the machine

then you pick out the motor off of ebay.
then variable speed of ebay or surplus center. or go with a pulley set-up for changing speeds if you need to.

now then what type motor should i be looking for + do you think i could upgrade my 1x42 with a slightly bigger motor and be happy till mid summer

If you can upgrade the motor I'd go with the 3/4 one. Use it for a buffer or a sanding disk down the road :D
Check your PM's

'Tim The Toolman Taylor' used to do it all the time, and it seemed to work for him....

I also have a gutless 1 x 42 sander with a 1/3 hp motor. I only use it to square things up and work away the handle material around the tang.

Another cheaper option (which coincidentally is how I make all my knives) then the KMG is a homemade disc sander. I got a 1 horse motor on a belt to a shaft with a disc on both ends mounted to a table. Rig up a 90 degree work rest in front of each disc and you have essentially the same thing as a reversible disc sander but with a lot more power. It's a bit of a pain because you go through a fair bit of sandpaper but it will get you buy. Proabably cost you less than 100 bucks. That 3/4hp motor will probably do just fine.

When ever you do get the funds..... KMG all the way. Absolutely an awesome machine. Hands down.

KMG is definitely the way to go.

If you don't think you can wait...then have a look here:

http://www.kovalknives.com/grinders.htm

There are a few "mid-range" grinders listed. They won't do what the KMG can do, but it might serve you well till you have enough saved up. (Remember, you'll need to buy a motor and/or drive for the KMG. So figure on at least 800...up to 1300 depending on what you want).

do you guys think KMG is better than Bader. I haven't seen either other than pictures but the baders sure look pretty sweet.

I have a BIII, var-spd 2hp. I'm very-much in love with it. Bear in mind the differences between the Bader and the KMG. Primarily, the Bader has a cast steel mainframe, which the motor attaches directly. The result is a very smooth operational feel to it. Very slick - no need to add a motor after the fact, but it is pricier than the KMG.

I'm about to start shopping for a new grinder to replace my Craftsman. How does a Burr King compare to a Bader or KMG?

The ones I have seen in action work very well, but I don't think they are as versatile.
