Does anyone have any experience with the C.Crane CC Plus radio?

Also, for you Sangean ATS909 users....How's your AM reception?

Paul

Both are excellent radios. I have a 909 and I got that one because I am a ham and that radio covers the ham bands. It's highly regarded amongst hams. The ccrane I bought for my girlfriend and she's happy with it.

I have the 909. Great radio. Good AM reception--I'm in Northern California and have on occasion picked up AM stations from as far away as Utah and New Mexico, but that's pretty rare. From what I understand, the CC Radio is supposed to be the ultimate in AM reception. Still, you might want to look into an AM antenna like the select-a-tenna if you are concerned primarily with AM.

ATS-909 is a great radio and very versatile in general. The CC Crane is supposed to have a little better AM reception but, does not have the versatility of the Sangean. Add an AM antennae to the Sangean if you need better AM reception then you get with this already excellant radio.

I'm leaning heavily towards the 909. Does Sangean have a web site? I can't seem to be able to find it if they do.

The 909 gets great reviews.
I bought a Grundig Yachtboy 400.
Awesome sounding radio.
I normally use it for FM or some SW listening
at lunchtime when I can sit outside.
Universal Radio has reconditioned units for $99.95.
Good luck.

Paul, you can't go wrong with the 909. I've had mine for years. It's my bedside radio, but it's also light enough that it makes a decent travel radio, though it's a bit too bulky for backpacking. C. Crane is a great company as well--great customer service. They can also tweak your 909 so that it doesn't mute when you are scanning stations. I think it's only 20$ or so to have them do the mod. Keep in mind that Sangean also manufactures the shortwave radios for Radio Shack. The Radio Shack DX-398 is identical to the 909 except for the nameplate. Sometimes they have pretty good sales on their radios.

Make sure you pay attention to the accessories when you buy the Radio Shack version. Yes, the radios are the same, but they are packaged differently.

Regarding price, I have yet to see Radio Shack sell the radio I have for less then what I paid on Ebay. It also came with all the accessories so, no added costs. If you can live with a gently used radio, you will save even more then me. While mine was gently used, I couldn't tell and it came with all the factory accessories still in original packaging and a $20 book that was thrown in. In the end, I got a fantastic radio for an average radio price.

Feature for feature in the same price class, the Sangean radios just offer more then Grundig, IMHO. In the past I was a Grundig man to the core.

OK guys, after weighing my thoughts, needs, and wants I decided to go with the C. Crane CC Plus. Shortwave reception would be cool, but I doubt I'd ever listen to it enough to justify having it. I listen to the radio mainly for music, news, weather, and some of the oddball stuff you find on AM.
Thanks to everyone for their help. I'll post a review after I've had time to play with it a little.

Radio Shack no longer carries their versions of the Sangeans, they have gone with the Grundig YB400PE as their primary shortwave radio. I have one (didn't get it from Radio Shack), and it's just fine, but I wish I still had my Radio Shack DX-398. Get one on Ebay while you can...
The CCradio is fine, too, I have an original, not the plus, and like getting weather and TV audio when I'm not near a TV.

For what it's worth, I bought a Radio Shack "Portable AM/FM Radio with Extended AM Range" (Catalog #: 12-903) last summer. I like to listen to Red Sox baseball on AM, but none of my other AM radios can pull in the stations. This particular Radio Shack model can REALLY pull in the AM stations. Add a Select-A-Tenna and you can practically pull in stations from the other side of the universe.

How are the other Sangean models? The ones for a lesser price. They have quite a few models and not that I mind paying about 240 for the 909 but how are the other ones as compared to the 909?
Thanks for your help here

They are good radios as best I can tell. Very competitive at any pricepoint.

Radio Netherlands reviews

From what I've read, Sangean seems to be the standard by which other portable radios are judged. The Sangean name is consistantly at the top of the review lists.

Can anyone comment on how the phone/wallwart jacks hold up on the YB400 vs CCRadio or 909? I have had a lot of trouble with the Sangeans having the jacks loosen up over time. The headphone jack has gotten erratic and loose on 2 different Sangeans. Also, the outside power cord jack has also loosened up and caused the radio to shut off unexpectedly.

Has anyone had any experience with these radios in this regard?

StuU-- no problems with my 909, and I've had it since somewhere around '98--can't remember exactly when I got it. I don't use headphones too often, but the wallwart jack gets used quite a bit as I use my 909 as a bedside radio and also take it with me when I travel. My friend got a 909 at around the same time, and as far as I know, he hasn't had any problems with his either.

Slightly OT:

Just a little quick lesson for anyone who might have missed a critical English class.

The question mark (?) does not represent the word "question"

So if you post a subject with "More Radio?" you are essentially asking if anyone would like another helping of Radio. Maybe Radio is the name of a dish or something.

But, I think, in this case you might be looking for "More Radio Questions"

Enjoy.

...And here I thought someone had something worthwhile to add to the discussion.
