Gentlemen, as you know I just received my first 3 GEC's here in Kenya. Although I have been in the modern knife scene for some time now, these are my first truly traditional slipjoints. My question is, what are some ways I can care for them, keep them in tip top shape. I know I should oil the blades, especially the carbon steel blades but should I also oil any other parts? I have a #73 trapper in pioneer bone (440c) a Boys Knife in carbon steel and a bullnose in 01. Any advice will be well heeded. I have been carrying the 73 daily, the blades are all scratched up and she is looking beautiful. Thanks! -Caleb

It's my understanding that the GECs with stainless steel blades also have stainless steel springs, so you should be good there. Remember that "stainless" doesn't mean rust-proof, so don't leave them soaking in water or juices, but otherwise it'll be fine (a bit of oil doesn't hurt either). As for your Boy's knife and the Bull Nose, the springs and liners are carbon steel as well, so if you don't want them to tarnish or rust, a bit of oil or Renaissance Was (a furniture polish) will keep those parts shiny.

Keeping carbon steel shiny requires a lot of upkeep. Oiling, polishing, etc. The alternative is to let a patina develop. If you don't know, a patina is a non-corrosive (apart from the initial layer) oxidation. Like what happens to bronze or copper over time. The patina will darken the steel, and turn into a protective layer that prevents actual rust from forming. Rust can still occur if neglected, but a patina will give you more protection than nothing. You can either let the patina develop over time, or you can force it by sticking the blade into an apple or potato and letting it sit. Wipe off and repeat until you like the way it looks.
