Digging into files once again, I note this pdf on American swords of note assembled in a readable history of the rock stars of American sabers.

I just blew my budget for this quarter and picked up an 1818 Starr saber with most of its Japanning. Something strange about this one. I have to consult the experts.

Thanks for the link. At least I was able to I.D. my 1906 Ames with some certainty with the info provided.
 
I need to make a repro or imitation saber. I think I have a Chinese shield knife (paidao - the precursor to the butterfly sword) on the list, next, though.

I love your posts in this subforum. thanks for the link. There is a hanger in the historical society in the town I live in, Cheshire, CT. I want to ask them if they will let me make a new one from bloomery steel so they can show the tourists how nice this thing was when it was new.
