Here is an email excerpt from a young Peace Corps volunteer who emails me from time to time. He is stationed down near Bhojpur.

==========================================
Rumor is (just a rumor of course) that the maoist activity is going to
be on a drastic increase after Tihar (end of October) and the embassy is
considering tomorrow whether or not they should evacuate all foreign
nationals. The Peace Corps itself is getting very weary and has thrown
around the idea of evacuating themselves. So we may not be here too much
longer.

Especially worried about my friend and her husband. Even being Canadian, this is not looking good at all.

It has become dangerous for tourists, Harry, and that is bad news not only for the tourists but for the tourism industry on which Nepal's economy is almost entirely dependent.

In a recent phone conversation with Pala he predicted this activity for Dasein and Tihar.
It is more effective during religious holidays. A greater impact.

Uncle Bill, how are the folks at BirGorkha feeling about all this? It seems to me that virtually everyone in Nepal stands to be affected if the maoist activity continues.

:
I have a book entitled as"The World's Most Dangerous Places."
In my edition Nepal isn't listed, but Pakistan and India have quite a listing. To put things in perspective, even the good ol' US of A has not got a real "good?" report.
With the problems in Nepal that will no doubt change in the next edition or I would assume so.

It's a shame that there always has to be those that buy into the promise of a better life through violence. Laughter and tears are a world wide language. I fear that there will be more tears than laughter until somehow the really decent people of this world take a hold of the reins and put a stop to it. And somehow it seems that even the decent people will need checks and balances by all the people or the decent will become the indecent and it will start all over again.

There's more, but it's my opinions and we all know about those. Nepal and her people's will be continually in our prayers.

Several years ago during the Gulf War there was a story about a young Iraq'i boy and how the army had a bulldozzer dig a long trench and these people were lined up along side of it. Then the army troop opened fire with automatic weapons and the dead and dying fell backwards into the ditch. This young boy wasn't wounded somehow and an even younger girl was. The boy tried to get the little girl to climb out of the ditch with him, but she was too afraid. The boy got away and the little girl was buried with the bodies.
To this day I continue to pray for this boy, who if he lived is a young man now, to not be like those that murdered his family and friends.
I pray that the hatred stops with him and that he works to fix things up in a good way. I also pray that my prayers for him are answered in a good way.
IF I ever get to Sundance it will be for the Children of our world.

Maoists!! --- few years back we Malaysian suffered a lot from their didst --- we ordinary citizen called them as Terrorists! --- army called them as Bandits! --- foreigners called them as Commies!! Is there any good names being related to them? I don't think so! --- I know ... Muslim in Nepal also in great danger! Allaahumma-(u)nsurhum! Somehow --- in Malaysia we did successfully get rid of them --- Alhamdu-li-(A)llaah! Gorkhas played important roles in that effort! Thank you all Gorkhas!

If old Uncle Bill was running the show over there the first thing I would do is conscript all retired Gorkhas and put them to work flushing out the Maoists and dealing with them in a manner which would insure they were put out of service -- period. Next effort would be to purge the government of all crooks. I think this done all would fall into place.

Thank You Yvsa,

You have said a great deal very well, with great heart.

Would that you could say it also to that young man.

IMHO if we purged ANY/ALL governments of all the crooks, the result would be ANARCHY! I do agree though that everything would fall into place. Maybe Gorkhas are the solution for our own socialists/communists/ terrorists/ democrats? Nov. 7 guys. It's the same fight.

I'm just confused as to why this hasn't gotten any attention in the press. This seems to be just as serious as the current problems in Palestine but there has been no coverage in either newspaper or TV. If Bill hadn't posted the news I never would have heard about it.

Nepal is far away up at the top of the world and of little importance to us. The country has no oil or other resources that are of economic interest to us so therefore it gets little attention. But it does serve as a buffer zone between India and China and I think this makes it deserving of some importance to everybody.
