I continue to find Schrade "Made in USA" knives in stores even thought they went Chinese back in 2004. Was in KMART today and saw a bunch of "Old Timers" and decided to grab 4 of them: 8OTCP - senior, 34OTCP - middleman, 108OTCP - junior (I guess that's Schrade lingo for small, medium, and large stockmans) and 104OTCP - minuteman.

They were all in the pegboard type package. See quick photo. A few questions:

What does the CP stand for in the item #?

Should I keep them in the sealed package if I'm going to collect them and not use?
Take Care,
George

CP is "clam pack".

Should you open or save as-is? I don't think there's a concensus on that. Knives with the original packaging will resell higher than loose knives. But for your own collection, it depends on how much you value the ability to "fondle" and whether or not you can store the clampacks without bending or wrinkling the plastic.

p.s. I have a quick question on those knives. They appear to be late-model packaging, so which ones are marked "Schrade+"?

Schrade+ was used to denote stainless blades, mostly on the Uncle Henry line at first. Beginning after 1997, Schrade made running transitions on some patterns of Old Timers from Carbon steel to stainless, however usually without giving them the Schrade+ designation. By the last two years, most Schrade knives were stainless. Not all, but most.

PS- As to the clam-or-unclam delima...go back and buy duplicates. Then open one set for playtime/display, put the other set away.

Thanks for the info Michael. I knew most of that. I'm trying to accumulate the different tang stamps (Schrade-Walden, Schrade+, etc.) that were released for each Old Timer model. But I've never seen a comprehensive list of which patterns were ever stamped "Schrade +".

Here are the "Schrade+" Old Timer models that I'm aware of:
3OT
5OT and OTG
6OT
53OTG
55OTG
98OT

Since the 8OT, 34OT, etc are so common, if there are Schrade+ versions of those, they'd be easy gaps to fill.

Thanks for the info on Schrade. Didn't see Schrade+ anywhere on the package or item. All packages state" Easy to Resharpen High Carbon Steel Blades".

Take Care,

George

If they were "Schrade+", it'd be marked on the tang and readable through the plastic. If the packages are all marked "Carbon steel," like the one you've photographed, then I would not expect the tang stamps to read "+".

Perhaps those models were never released in a "+" version?

Thanks for checking anyway!

Don't be surprised to find some of the slipjoint Old Timers from 2003-2004 with stainless blades but no + mark. The 152OT's bear witness to this. Most of these knives will be found in the last package design, what we call the "diamondplate". No hard and fast rules here either.
