I'd like to add another EDC beater to my rotation in the $60 or below line. I currently switch out among the following...

-Spyderco Native
-KaBar Dozier
-Boker Trance
-Benchmade Pika
-Gerber Harsey

And the rest of these will sometimes make it into a pocket depending on mood.

What would you suggest as a new addition?

If you want something closer to the $60 mark, you can try a Benchmade Griptilian or Mini Griptilian. If you're looking for a less expensive option, the Byrd Meadowlark or Cara Cara would be an excellent choice.

I was actually just looking at the JYD2. Any big reason to go with it over the regular JYD?

Read a couple of threads in which the JYD was found to be harder to open than the JYDII.

Aside from the price tag, what are your wants in an EDC? Any preferences to blade size?

I see you have a Native. How about a Native III. Different steel (VG10). Different handle (more shaped to the hand, a tad bulkier in the pocket). Slightly different blade shape as well. web price ~ $45 online

You have a KaBar Dozier. What about a "large KaBar Dozier". KaBar just came out with it. AUS8 blade 3.5" long , 0.155" thick. The lock bar runs the length of the knife and is that same 0.155". Doesn't need liners with that hunk of steel in there. ~$25 online

What about a Benchmade NRA 12410 Small Steigerwalt? 2.7" 440C blade and micarta handles.

Ach, I have it! Fallkniven U2. 2 1/2" Laminated steel drop point blade. The center part of the laminated steel is hardened to 64 HRC. Zytel handle. Lockback. Not a one handed opener. But a really sweet blade. Runs about $49 online. This one is more than a beater, it's a lifetime keeper.

Blade size isn't a major issue. As long as it isn't so large it won't fit in a pocket I'm ok with it.

The knife would be used for work and everyday carry uses. Cutting line, rope and hose, opening boxes and bags, slicing fruit and other food, some skinning of small game or fish, light wood work, general scraping etc...

Kershaw storm II $30 at wal-mart. a pain in the butt to open, a little weighty, but the blade is tough. cheap enough to beat to crap.

CRKT M16 fun to flip with the "carson flipper" AUS8, $40 @ ebay (i think)

mini-grip or full size if you can find a good price - you need an axis lock in that lineup...you wont be disapointed. this is my #1 recommendation.

Top left is the Camillus Sizzle, just under that is a Benchmade 3550 Mel Pardue. In the top center red circle is a Benchmade Vex and then under that is the Gerber Harsey Air Ranger.

The Sizzle and Gerber were both on sale for less than $20 at eknifeworks. The Vex was $40 at NewGraham and the 3550 auto was $130 at BestKnives.

I think I'm going to order both the Kershaw JYD2 and the BM Grip.

Thanks all and keep the suggestions coming....

For $60 buy two Byrd Meadowlarks. I can't think of a more versatile, user-friendly knife on a low budget.
