This should really be an addendum to J.J. Magnum's post I guess, but here goes. As I survival newbie I have yet to find a good supplier of snare wire. Does anyone know where it can be bought in Eastern N.C.?

My experience of snares extends only to the rabbit and fox snares that can be bought here in shooting shops. But, both are just metal cable, the fox snare is steel and the rabbit one is brass.

Think of other things that cable can be used for, the brass stuff is often used for hanging pictures on the wall. There are plenty of modern interior designers that use fairly thin steel cable to suspend lights from ceilings. Fishing trace is a bit thin, but you might find some that wouls do the job.

How about things like piano wire? Or how about the kevlar/spectra superbraid fishing lines? The latter aren't stiff enough to hold a loop, but could be used where you can support them with twigs or grass.

Think what your line has to do, then think what there is around that might do that job, it doesn't have to come in a pack marked "Snare Wire". Just remember that indiginous people catch lots of small game with snares made of natural fibre cordage. Africans use bailing/fencing wire to catch antelope. Sure you can find something to use where you are.

Craft stores always carry various gauges of steel wire that are great for snares. The bonus of steel wire over brass is that you can magnetize little pieces of it to use as a field expedient compass....

strong fishing line would make excellent snares as well....

Thanks folks, hadn't quite thought of things in that way before, your information is quite helpful.

I bought snare wire from this guy, along with a handful of other stuff. Service and response was good, but you have to email him for a price list:

BlueLine Outfitters, Inc.

FAX: 717-632-7681
Email: bluelineoutfitters@hotmail.com

Seems like I also picked up some DOT bags, some Potable Aqua vials... lots of little stuff I can't find locally. Anyway, he did good when I ordered from him.

You can also go to your local fishing supply store and buy some 16# monel fish line (I kinda like Williams brand). Works great for squirels and rabits. Just remember to boil an dye them before using...your succes rait will be much higher.
