Probably my Grandfather, when I was a kid about 8 yrs old visiting my grandparents in Europe, my Grandfather gave me an old English Jack Knife,(since lost or broken) and showed me how to whittle a whistle out of a piece of green willow branch.
I kept the knife, and the next time I saw my Grandfather he came to the USA and brought a handmade Hungarian Dagger with him, he gave me that dagger and told me the story of who made it,(someone named Laci Motuz) and how it was made. I started to develope an appreciation for the work that went into the dagger. As I got older I started to buy my own knives, a Schrade Trapper here, a Case Canoe there, then a custom fixed blade, a few Advertisers, some higer end production folders,( BM's, Spydies, a William Henry Pearl handled Lancet, before you know it I'm looking at almost 300 pocket knives, and wondering how I got here.
I still don't consider myself a collector, there is no theme or pattern to what I have, I buy what I like, and use what I buy.
I'm more of an accumulator, I suppose if I sold everything and became more focused on a paticular maker, or pattern, I could build a nice collection. Maybe someday I will but for now I'm content to keep on accumulating, what ever tickles my fancy
