More useful: scissors or philips head combo?

Yesterday I purchased a SAK for my keychain. At the time I thought they were the regular classic model with scissors. Instead the knife was the Rally model which appears to be the same as the Classic but instead of scissors, it has the "combo" magnetic philips head with bottle opener and wirestripper.

Anyone think the scissors would be better as a keychain knife or the combo tool?

I guess the rambler would be the best of both worlds but I don't think they have that locally.

I can hardly think of a use for scissors. If you needed to cut some gauze, well use your knife. I use phillips heads just about everyday in all kinds of situations, and I do some wiring once in a while.

The small phillips and the scissors are both useful, which like you say is why you need the Rambler (which is a Rally + scissors). I find the scissors more useful than the mini driver, for clipping off skin boo boos, stray hairs, strings on clothing, etc. The Victorinox scissors are the most precise of any MT scissors, IMO. But the whole world is held together with small phillips (toys, remotes, small electronics, etc.), so that driver is useful too.

Of course, if you had a Rambler, then I would say "add the pen" and get Manager.

I use the scissors on my classic almost everyday for something. Personal grooming, precise cuts in miscellaneous material that a knife is not that good for. The Victorinox scissors are so precise they could be surgical instruments. I can get by without a dedicated phillips, but when you need a small sharp scissors, nothing else will do.

I bought a 2 pack for $20. I thought it was a decent deal.

Maybe I should return it and buy a Rambler or classic? Classic will be about $13-14 and Rambler $23 (seems a bit high for what it is).

I pick the scissors as well. The end of the nailfile can be used on the larger phillips OK. Scissors are very handy for cutting hangnails before they catch on something and tear.

I think I use the scissors on my Classic and Ambassador (Classic's on my keychain and Ambassador is in my pocket) second only to the nailfile and toothpick. The Ambassador blade is generally used to open mail and the occasional package. The tweezers might get used once a month. I have no need for a bottle cap/can opener on my EDC or a phillip's head driver. If I'm in my vehicle I have both a MT and a small tool kit.

Scissors, blade, can opener, and maybe a screwdriver are all that are needed, IMHO.

But then again, I carried a Huntsman for a while so I don't mind havimg a million tools.

:p

Rambler all the way, it's the little SAK that could.

But if I had to choose, scissors by far.

I would vote for the phillips. I only use the scissors extremely seldom, the little Philips gets used much more often. Most things I could use small scissors for can also be done with a sharp blade.

So it really depends on what you do.

now let's see what those tiny scissors are use for...
trim nails, facial hairs, cut strings, cut paper.
now, compared with the combo philips head /bottle opener/wire stripper device.
it offers specific uses are as suggested by manufacturer.
well its nice... to have for those rare "just in case" situations.
i see more practical use for scissors small as they are but at least it will see more use
combo tool sounds handy but only if you're a confirmed do-it-youself gadget freak.
but then again, a gadget freak would probably be having a full sized plier multitool...

I carried a Manager for a few years and it was probably the best knife for daily city use that I've found. I used every tool pretty frequently unlike some other SAKs I've had.

This has been my experience with the 58mm's as well. I'd carry a 91mm sak in a pocket, and almost never use most of the tools on it. Yet the little 58's like the classic, manager, and rambler, seem to be actually more useful on a every day basis.

I've got to agree heavily with Quattro and Jackknife and Boxant and powernoodle. My experience since getting into SAKs has followed theirs, the Rambler is incredible. It's so much more substantial than a Classic but not really much thicker. I'm experimenting with a Midnight Manager instead, but the light scale is really thick and I bet a regular Manager would be much more manageable.

I think the Rally is really cool and they make great gifts for young adults, much like Waiters. I just think that the Rambler is the ideal 58mm SAK. It completely gets the platform right, and it packs a ton of capability into a small package.
