I know nothing about them either! If this was me (and I love old pole barns) 150 years ago I'd be gathering up chisels and mallets instead.

Just be careful. Somebody has a business cutting up axes and auctioning them off as mortising axes.

If anyone's got a photo of a fake I'd like to see it. I know Gransfors made/makes these. What other established companies are known for this type axe?

In the Period you'd only hit this with a wooden mallet, and with a sharp blade, the poll probably held up fairly well. That said, the larger one here has a bit of mushrooming.
 
I think there was a version for cutting mortises for framing and another for cutting really rough mortices in fence posts for post and rail fencing. I remember seeing some drawings of the fence post mortise axe, maybe in an Eric Sloane book. I don't know which type you have there, but if they were fakes they are really good looking fakes.
 
at a swapmeet i saw one of these. every year one specific type of axe is popular, last year they were keen kutters, this year it was ice axes. the seller was absolutely convinced it was an ice axe. i didnt want to argue a thin profile, welded bit axe like that was a mortice axe.
