Mortised Tang Handle?

Matt Lamey posted a pic of his nice recurve fighter with a Micarta mortise handle, Allen Blade does the same with his MEUK. How are these handles made? My thought is that it’s two pieces of Micarta with one slab recessed to fit the stub tang than the other slab sandwiches the rest of the tang. Am I on the right track? If it’s one piece of Micarta please enlighten me.

Thanks,
Tom

Close. Usually both handle slabs have a section milled out for the tang.

Thats it . I use and end mill andchannel each scale 1\2 of the thickness of the tang. I have also used a drill press and a dremil router tool. Do both sides then glue one side on to the tang with epoxy. I use the 5 min kind. When it is set but not quite hard i drill out for the rivet, clean up the handle and glue the other side on.Use the previous drilled hole to line up for the other side and drill that scale.
Put in rivets or bolts or whatever you want to use and finish the handle.

I use a dovetail cutter, this gives me an additional "channel" of epoxy securing the tang. I also usually grind deep notches in the tang to hold as well. Along with either pins or Corby bolts, you have a package that is nearly as strong as a traditional full tang, but with only a fraction of the weight. This method also gives more freedom in handle material and shaping alternatives.

Thanks, Matt.
