Here is a new piece I have been debating on posting. It is the first time I have used the material in this manner. It turned out pretty interesting, actually pretty darn cool looking. Here it is

The blade is made from a cable in a can billet re-stacked to increase the end presentation of the cable. Blade is 8.25 inches long.

This is a close-up of the blade and guard area. All the fixtures are the same material. The handle is stabilized English Walnut.

And finally the Pommel. The OAL is 13".

Thanks for looking.

That mosaic is cool, not what I thought it would be like but than again I've never even heard of cable mosaic before. Well done Chuck.

Very nice that mosaic pattern is sweet looking as is the english walnut handle. Overall the complete knife is just very well done imho. I like the swedge also.

That is a very cool pattern indeed. Like Bruce, that is definitely not what I had envisioned when I saw "cable" in the title. I like it a lot.

Thanks all.

I have played with a few variations, accordion, ladder, twist etc but never really achieved what I was looking for. I decided to give this a try and it turned out really well. People who have seen it say it looks like animal tracks or leopard spots.

Thanks again for the kind remarks

It looks like peering through a microscope at cells swimming in solution. Very cool. Very nice walnut wood there too.

Amoeba Damascus? (TM)

Very Awsome Chuck, I've allways thought about trying that. I started a billet a while ago, I welded up 4 cables and 4 wayed it, then had plans to 4 way it agiain and "Ferry Flip" it when I got involved with something else.

Very nice indeed.

Congrats! Ti's a cool bowie Chuck
Love the pattern very much! Saw it the first time on my Golok Rembau where you used it for the fixtures :)

And the stabilized English Walnut sure shows a very a nice grain ;)
Great work, Chuck

Yup I used it for fixtures on your knife. It looked cool so I re-stacked it in a 4 way then tripled that. So this now has 12 times the pattern. I have tried this with plain cable and it did not give me the definition I was looking for. It just looked like a bunch of dots. This gave me a really nice look and is more solid than most plain cable billets..

Again thanks for all the nice comments.

so you what, put the cables in a can and fill the empty space with powder steel or something? If so, what kind? In fact, what the hell kind of steel are cables made from anyway:confused: Always wondered about that.

Cable in a can is exactly the way I do it. I used 1084 and added 5% pure nickel powder by weight. Cable, like most found steel can be just about anything. The material I got was from a crane. I has a well drilled and the has to replace the cable. The owner told.me it was extra improved plow steel. This works out to be 1080. I did some welding and hardening tests just to make sure. All was good with this material. Now I have 500 feet of 3/4 inch cable. I will be doing another billet of this soon.
